Position Overview: The Population Health Intern will work directly with the Quality Performance Coach within the Population Health Department of PacificSource Health Plans. In this role, interns will develop the skills to identify the public health needs of plan members across the Medicare, Medicaid and Commercial lines of Business. Additionally, interns will be able to assist the Quality Performance Coach in making health and data-driven decisions for best practices within the organization. The Intern will work alongside the Coach to work with clinics, community partners and other patient care settings to improve quality metric performance. This will focus on quality improvement and practice transformation efforts through collaboration with clinic staff, sharing expertise in best practices as well as preparing and communicating performance information to clinics on their performance, data sources, and provider incentives to drive results. As public health professionals, interns will work directly with the Population Health, Quality and Analytics teams to complete data analysis, policy initiatives, and public health planning.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Support the Quality Performance Coach in management of clinic partner relationships within workstreams and workgroups between internal and external stakeholders across OR, WA, MT and ID.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives handling multiple large-scale projects, focusing on QIM, Star Ratings, HEDIS and Risk Adjustment.
    • Gain knowledge and understanding of the quality measures, their nuances and the specifications to communicate company-wide goals.
  • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders electronically, to enhance quality work and public health issues.
  • Assist in developing or peer-reviewing population health-related external educational materials for all levels of health literacy (flyers, power-points, etc.).
  • Support data management as it relates to quality work. Data management may include file transport of data between plan and clinic, working with the software development teams to enhance reporting capabilities, and verifying that data is accurate, actionable, and up to date.
  • Gather, download, and/or prepare data within statistical analysis software (Tableau, SSRS, MTMPath etc.) as agreed upon by committee structures, to support data driven decision making. Data may include medication adherence rates, medication gap lists, and recommendations for improvement opportunities.

Supporting Responsibilities:
  • Meet department and company performance and attendance expectations.
  • Follow the PacificSource privacy policy and HIPAA laws and regulations concerning confidentiality and security of protected health information.
  • Participate in member outreach events, company sponsor health fairs, and continued education trainings (virtual at this time).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUCCESS PROFILE

Work Experience: Preference will be given for healthcare experience or certifications.

Education, Certificates, Licenses: Must be actively enrolled and in good standing with Oregon State University's College of Public Health and Human Sciences; must be a junior or senior undergraduate student within a Public Health major; or may be a graduate student within the MPH program.

Knowledge: Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office. Excellent verbal and technical writing skills. Excellent public relations skills. Some understanding of Medical Terminology. Understanding of public health initiatives, evidence based medicine and care coordination required. Requires ability to define and prioritize problems and manage workload without direct supervision. Ability to work independently under general instructions, self-directed and motivated.

Environment: Work inside in a general office setting with ergonomically configured equipment. Travel is required approximately 5% of the time.

Physical Requirements: Stoop and bend. Sit and/or stand for extended periods of time while performing core job functions. Repetitive motions to include typing, sorting and filing. Light lifting and carrying of files and business materials. Ability to read and comprehend both written and spoken English. Communicate clearly and effectively.
