Entry-Level Police Officer
Preserves public peace, protects life and property, prevents crimes, arrests violators of the law, enforces all laws and ordinances. Patrols assigned area using a motorcycle, patrol car, or on foot; responds to calls for service; initiates police action when appropriate; investigates crimes in progress; mediates disputes; renders aid to the sick, injured and those desiring assistance. Work requires the use of discretion and independent judgment and is reviewed by inspection and observation from senior staff while on the job, verbal and written reports, and quantitative and qualitative evaluations. Performs related work as required.

Essential Functions

You must meet all of the minimum job requirements to be considered for the position of Entry-Level Police Probationary Officer:

  • Must be a citizen of the United States
  • Must be 21 by the date of hire (SEPTEMBER 2022)
  • Must possess (or be able to acquire) a valid driver's license
  • Have completed 64 semester credit hours of academic study from an accredited college as accepted by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony
  • Be of high moral character and free of any recent major or habitual violations of the law, including drug usage or other activities or associations that would affect credibility as a police officer.
  • Must successfully pass all phases of the hiring process
  • Must meet the Idaho Peace Officer Standards Training requirements for certification as a Police Officer
  • Must be able to perform all essential functions of the position with or without a reasonable accommodation

    Certain other criminal or driving convictions may be grounds for disqualification.


BACKGROUND REVIEW

MILITARY SERVICE
We recognize the value of military training and experience. Military service is accepted in place of a portion of the 60-semester college academic credits to apply. To qualify, you must meet all of the following:
  • Completed 32-semester college academic credits
  • Possess an Honorable Discharge OR be an active member of a Reserve Component/National Guard Unit and be in good standing
  • Achieved a rank equivalent of E-4 or above
  • Must agree to obtain a cumulative total of 64-semester college academic credits or equivalent within five years of the date of hire with the Boise Police Department.
  • Please note: Military Service members may obtain college credit by completing the POST Academy, the Boise Police Department's Advanced Academy, and the Boise Police Department's Field Training Program.

    Working Conditions

    DRUG-FREE
    Drug-Free Workplace: In accordance with the City of Boise Drug-Free Workplace Regulation, this position is designated as safety-sensitive and is subject to testing requirements including Post Offer Applicant Testing, Random Testing, Reasonable Suspicion, Post - Accident, etc. Applicants will be required to submit to screening for illegal drug use prior to hiring. Appointment to this position is contingent upon a negative pre-employment drug test.

    This position is required to qualify and maintain qualification standards to carry firearms.

    PHYSICAL EFFORTS
    While performing the duties of this job the employee is always lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs, frequently lifting/carrying up to 101 + lbs. Also, the employee is always pushing/pulling up to 50 lbs, frequently pushing/pulling up to 101 + lbs. The noise level is occasionally loud. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear, smell, touch, and feel. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, run, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb, and balance. Position requires hand/finger dexterity. Additional physical efforts include: A Police Officer's duties range from periods of physical inactivity to situations requiring extreme physical exertion, stress, and which may involve danger.

    Working EnvironmentThe work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, in wet and humid conditions, with areas of dust, odors, mist, gases, or other airborne matter. Employees work in/at heights and confined spaces.
    Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. Officers at all levels are expected to maintain physical condition to pursue suspects and serve warrants under any conditions such as uneven surfaces, construction sites, ice, traffic, open and enclosed areas with dogs, and public and private spaces. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria, bodily fluids, and chemicals. Additional environmental conditions include work at crime scenes which may be hazardous or unsanitary, located in houses, buildings, outdoors in adverse weather conditions, etc.
    Individuals will be subjected to evidence of violence or trauma, including graphic and disturbing scenes of homicide, sexual assault, robbery, traffic accidents, abuse, arson, autopsy subjects (deceased persons, children, and animals), and related evidence at all stages during the investigation and prosecution of crimes.

    This position works: assigned shifts may include holidays, swing and/or graveyard, on-call, overtime, call-back, as needed.
