Overview


The Physician provides clinical and professional support to the areas of Occupational Health Services (OHS). This role involves working collaboratively with the Nurse Practitioner to provide occupational health care, health education and the promotion of optimal health to Princeton University employees. This may occur at the time of application for temporary disability, on fitness for duty evaluation, or in the course of a worker's compensation injury or exposure. The Physician also provides guidance and supervision as well as clinical services for the Medical Surveillance Program that includes Hearing Conservation, Respiratory Protection, UHS staff health status medical clearance, CDL driver examinations and medical compliance for laboratory researchers and employees entering animal facilities. The Physician will encourage and assist patients to take an active role in following through with their personal physician. The partnership will minimize the impact of impairment on the individual's capacity to participate competitively in the work environment, with the goal of reduction in disability and lost workdays.


Responsibilities

Responsibilities in Occupational Health Services
Clinical Care (80%)
* Provides acute medical care for all work-related injuries
* Provides continuing medical care for work related illnesses & injuries
* Performs preliminary x-ray interpretation
* Performs suturing
* Performs periodic evaluations and exit exams for employees with exposures to specific health hazards; e.g. asbestos, noise, toxic substances, and others as specified by government standards
* Provides travel planning and immunizations for staff and faculty
* Participates in case management for those staff and faculty requiring short term disability status
* Performs evaluations and medical clearance for employees performing laboratory research with animals and live viruses and for other employees who need to enter those animal facilities.
* Provide medical evaluations and tracking of laboratory exposures (animals, viruses, chemicals, radiation)
* Assists department managers and Human Resources in the medical review for employees requesting workplace accommodations
* Performs CDL examinations for PU employees who are required to hold a CDL license as mandated per DOT guidelines
* Provides Hearing Consultations for employees enrolled in the Hearing Conservation Program who are noted to have a confirmed Standard Threshold Shift on audiograms
* Assists department managers/Human Resources specialists with medical evaluation of employees when there is a concern regarding the employee's fitness for duty
* Provides evaluation and First-Aid for non-work related emergent medical concerns including coordination of hospital transport and notification to individual's healthcare provider
Health Promotion & Education (5%)
* Participates in Health Promotion activities (i.e. cardiac risk assessment)
* Consultation and promotion of health lifestyle behaviors, referral to EAP and CareBridge for substance abuse and behavioral health issues
* Participates on University and UHS committees
Administrative Management (20%)
* Maintains professional standards with regard to relationships with patients, in a manner consistent with NJBME and professional organizations' standards
* Maintains professional standards in the management of confidential information and treats interactions with individuals as privileged communications
* Works with the Director of Occupational Health Services to update OHS Policies and Procedures
* Maintains compliance with regulatory requirements, such as reporting reportable diseases
* Participates in various committees and work groups according to the needs of UHS
* Works collaboratively with key campus partners to ensure the health and safety of University personnel in keeping with compliance standards (EHS, Risk Management, HR, DPS, Facilities, Campus Dining, Building Services, Dean of Faculty, Library)
Other duties as assigned
Training & Professional Development
* Maintains current certification in CPR and AED with annual training sessions.
* Maintains current licensure in NJ, and current CDS and DEA registrations and will comply with NJBME and other regulatory standards. In addition, a physician will practice in a manner consistent with the standards of her/his professional specialty board
* Participates regularly in professional continuing education activities and will meet NJ State continuing CE requirements for licensure, as well as CE requirements as required by her/his specialty certification Board. It is expected that a UHS physician will continuously update her/his knowledge and skills in order to provide an optimal level of care
* Physician seeks only those privileges for which she or he has training and competence
* Physician applies for privileging for procedures he/she will perform and will not perform those procedures unless approved by the Medical Director.
* Be assigned, in rotation, some nights and weekends on call. During the academic year this takes the form of on-site and phone coverage. During the non-academic year this will usually takes the form of administrative call by phone with rare on-site responsibilities.
* When a UHS physician is “on-call” she/he will be expected to provide care for the patients of UHS physicians who are not present and review and act upon the abnormal lab / x-ray results of clinicians who are not present.

Qualifications


ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
* New Jersey license as an MD or DO. Primary specialty in Occupational Medicine but will consider specialty in Family Practice, Internal Medicine or Emergency Medicine.
* 3-5 years of experience working as an MD
* Experience in occupational/employee health
* Ability to take initiative to solve problems; to be open and flexible in a changing workplace; to engage in helpful behavior toward colleagues; to demonstrate a positive attitude and to work as part of a team
* Working knowledge of OSHA mandated health programs, workers' compensation regulations, and federal and state health and safety regulations
* Current CPR/AED certification.
* Computer literacy and ability to develop maintain and update the computer skills required to fully utilize the Occupational Health Manager and Medicat computer management programs.
* Be knowledgeable in principles and methodologies (e.g., Plan-Do-Study-Act, Root Cause Analysis, measurement, data collection, and analysis) needed to support and lead Quality Improvement projects and activities and/or willing to attend UHS-based Quality Improvement basic training within first 6-months of hire.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
* Experience working in a university setting.
* Familiarity with total work systems (such as the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, and Baldrige National Quality Program); and reviewing and analyzing data.
