Description:

SUMMARY

Under the direction of a Registered Pharmacist, assists Pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications, maintaining the drug inventory, and maintaining patient records. Provides courteous, cooperative, and timely service to patients, visitors and staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education
Minimum
High school education or equivalent.
Preferred
Completion of a formal Pharmacy Technician training program; or two years of college with emphasis in
math, science, or medical field applications.
Credentials/Licensure
Minimum
Fully licensed as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) in the State of Michigan. Currently
employed Pharmacy Technicians at Mercy Health may also satisfy this requirement with a Limited
Pharmacy Technician Licensure.
Related Experience
Minimum
Two years of pharmacy work experience.
Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Minimum
Good written and verbal communication skills. Good math skills (multiplication, division, addition,
subtraction) in calculations involving fractions, decimals, percentages and volumes.
Computer Competency
Familiarity with standard desktop and windows based computer system, including email, e-learning,
intranet and computer navigation. Ability to use other software required to perform essential functions.
Physical/Mental
Minimum
Repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., preparing IV admixtures, use of a computer keyboard). May
require lifting and carrying loads up to 40 lbs., including boxes, equipment, unit dose-cassettes,
and IV solutions and stooping or kneeling (e.g., to pick up items from the floor, to remove and replace
items on lower shelves, and to file documents in lower file drawers). Sitting, walking, or standing for long
periods of time (4-8 hours) often. Must be able to physically operate the equipment for the job.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Potential for exposure to infectious patients and materials. Potential for exposure to hazardous and toxic substances (including
chemotherapy, cytotoxic drugs, and cleaning solutions). Potential for sticks or cuts by needles and other sharp items. Potential for
muscoloskeletal injuries if proper lifting and carrying techniques are not used.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Prepares, packages, and distributes medication orders per physician request, pharmacist request, or prearranged work assignment
.
according to established policies, procedures and protocols.
Maintains adequate stock of medications and supplies according to established policies and procedures.
.
Contributes to effective and quality operation of the department.
.
Maintains logs, records, and other required files and documentation; answers telephone and pneumatic tube; and handles cash
.
transactions.
Prepares IV admixtures and other sterile products.
.
Processes medication charges and credits according to established policy.
.
Performs basic pharmacy computer order entry.
.
Special assignments per addendums listed below.
.
Participate in the training, education, precepting, and evaluation of pharmacy students and/or residents as assigned.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

SYSTEMS AND INFORMATION
To ensure appropriate utilization of Protected Health Information (PHI) associated with the Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Saint Mary's Confidentiality of Information Standards, as well as other regulatory entities,
individuals employed in this position will be granted systems and information access as appropriate for this position.

ADDENDUM I - PHARMACY TECH III - BUYER
Meets with sales representatives to obtain information about new drugs and sales promotions.

Practices appropriate inventory control and accountability procedures to ensure adequate inventory within budget constraints.
.
Determines appropriate drug inventory levels following formulary specifications and usage trends.
.
ADDENDUM II - PHARMACY TECH III - AUTOMED OPERATOR
Operates automated dispensing machine for all unit dose cart fills. Also performs maintenance and troubleshoots problems.
.
Orients and educates operators of automated dispensing machine.
.
Maintains drug database and tests new/recalibrated cassettes for automated dispensing machine.
.
ADDENDUM III - PHARMACY TECH III - NEONATAL COMPOUNDING TECH
Prepares IV admixtures, chemotherapy injections, neo-natal TPN's using Automix Compounder.
.
ADDENDUM IV - PHARMACY TECH III - HOME INFUSION IV TECHNICIAN
Interprets and follows complicated compounding formulas.
.
Maintains advanced knowledge of prescription labeling requirements.
.
Maintains advanced knowledge of IV stability and storage issues.
.
ADDENDUM V - PHARMACY TECH III - HOME INFUSION LEAD TECHNICIAN
Coordinates asset management including logs, maintenance and contracts.
.
Oversees departmental inventory and all supply contracts.
.
Assigns shipping, courier and delivery tasks including accountability and signature logs.
.
Continuously looks for process improvements to eliminate and reduce waste.
.
ADDENDUM VI - PHARMACY TECH III - MEDICATION RECONCILIATION TECHNICIAN
Assists in ensuring accurate and complete medication reconciliation across the continuum of care, beginning in the Emergency
Department or the inpatient units, and under the direct supervision of the Pharmacy Department.
Gathers information on the patient's medications from family or the patient in a professional, non-invasive manner.
.
Collects and compiles a complete list of patient's home medications, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal
.
supplements, recording drug name, dosage, frequency, compliance and last dose taken.
Interviews the patient to obtain any known drug allergies and reactions.
.
Contacts pharmacy, physician offices, etc. to obtain the most accurate medication list possible.
.
Reconciles final home medication list with patient.
.
Inputs all medication information into the computer.
.
Requires training and competency validation in the medication history process.
