SUMMARY

Bering Straits Native Corporation is seeking an experienced and qualified Payroll Specialist I. The position of Payroll Specialist reports to the Payroll Supervisor. Duties of the Payroll Specialist include preparing, processing and reconciling payrolls for employees in a multi-company environment, in multiple states. Position requires routine payroll functions with little deviation from the established procedures. The Payroll Specialist may also be responsible for periodic and quarterly tax payments and filings.

DOE $24-$26/hour
Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Enters or downloads and reviews weekly, bi-weekly and semi-monthly time sheets for union, SCA, non-exempt and exempt employees.
  • Under general supervision, this position is responsible for full processing of regular multi-state employees and out-of-cycle payrolls (bonuses, terminations, etc.). This includes auditing and processing incoming payroll data often under tight deadlines.
  • Assists departments with applicable forms and processes.
  • Calculation of exemption items such as bonus, garnishments and terminations.
  • Responsible for compiling, copying and ensuring all payroll paperwork and reports are saved accurately and timely.
  • Review and update employee leave records.
  • Perform tasks to establish and maintain employee/payroll records.
  • Other related duties as required and assigned within the Payroll Department.
Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS - EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION

Required (Minimum) Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • At least (1) year of continuous payroll work experience.
  • Multi-company & multi-state environment payroll processing experience.
Preferred
  • Deltek Costpoint experience.
  • Alaska Native Corporation experience.
  • Government Contracting experience.
  • Deltek Time & Expense experience.
  • At least one (1) year experience with CBAs, WDs, & SCAs.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
  • Must be able to operate office machines, including a computer, copier, scanner, and 10-key by touch as well as make arithmetic calculations.
  • Ability to work with and maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to pass a drug, background, and reference checks.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office products such as Excel and Word.
  • Time-management skills to be able to prioritize tasks in a dynamic and team-oriented environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to build relationship with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to balance multiple competing priorities and meet daily, weekly, and monthly deadlines.
  • Good organizational and time management skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills, be able to work in a team environment and demonstrate sensitivity and respect for a diverse work population.
  • Ability to learn and understand and work in accordance with the Company's Policies and Procedures.
  • Dependable and punctual.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work Environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be borne by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Job is performed in an office setting with exposure to computer screens and requires extensive use of a computer, keyboard, mouse and multi-line telephone system. The work described herein is primarily a modern office setting. Occasional travel may be required.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFYING FACTORS

As a condition of employment, may be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening, as well as have acceptable reference and background check results to obtain access to military base. Must have reliable transportation to/from work or military installations as needed or required for the position.
