Provides direct and indirect age-specific patient care duties and assessment under the guidance and delegation of a registered nurse while adhering to organizational standards, policies, and protocols.

a) Responds to requests for patient care assistance as delegated by the registered nurse
b) Maintains skill level to perform patient care tasks and interventions within scope of practice after competency validation to include but not limited to:

i) Intravenous catheter insertion
ii) 12-lead EKG acquisition
iii) Cardiac monitoring and rhythm recognition
iv) Orthopedic splint application
v) Laboratory specimen collection and process
vi) POC waived testing
vii) Oxygen therapy administration and monitoring

c) Administers medications and intravenous fluids and monitors outcomes as delegated by registered nurse following provider order and hospital policy after competency validation.
d) Paramedics may not be the primary care giver to administer blood products, fibrinolytics, insulin, or moderate sedation.

i) The paramedic can serve as the second sign off for Medications and blood products an RN will be the primary validator

Document care provided and patient's progress toward attainment of desired outcomes in electronic medical record.

Completes the intake assessment specific to the department they are assigned to and documents it in the EHR.

a) Initiates treatment and testing based on department protocols.
b) Recognizes high risk patients and situations and communicates with charge RN to coordinate patient placement.
c) In the Emergency department, the paramedic will do the triage assessment and documentation on ambulance and walk-in patients after completing triage training, to include the Emergency Severity Index, and competency validation.

Performs additional job specific requirements and other duties as assigned after competency validation

Qualifications
Experience Minimum Required

  • Graduated from an accredited Paramedic Program
  • 1 year paramedic
Experience Preferred/Desired
  • > than 2 years Paramedic
Education Minimum Required
  • Paramedic Certification
Education Preferred/Desired
  • AS
Special Skills Minimum Required
  • BLS (AHA or ARC)
  • ACLS
  • PHTLS or 2 hours of approved trauma education within 12 months of hire or transfer
  • PALS
Special Skills Preferred/Desired
  • BLS, ACLS, PALS and NRP Instructor Certifications
  • Care in the hospital setting
  • Critical care experience.
Licensure and/or Certifications Required
  • NREMT Paramedic Certification
  • NH paramedic License
  • ACLS
  • PALS
  • PHTLS certification or 2 hours of trauma education within 6 months of hire
  • BLS (AHA or ARC)
Licensure and/or Certifications Preferred/Desired
  • PHTLS
