Additional Job Description

THIS POSTING IS ONLY AVAILABLE TO THOSE IN GMNA AND NORTH AMEARICA.

In our pursuit to create a world with Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions and Zero Congestion, GM's Global Manufacturing Engineering team is challenging the limits on what is possible and embracing agility as it reimagines how to build the next generation of vehicles. Our diverse team of Manufacturing Engineers play a crucial role in transforming our facilities through implementing the adoption of ground-breaking technologies. From raw sheet metal to final assembly, this team is reinventing the tools and processes that will enable GM to deliver on our promise to create an all-electric future.

The position will be based at the GM Global Technical Center in Warren, Michigan. In this role you will support our Paint Shops in our automotive assembly plants. You will be involved in developing the prime and topcoat paint processes for the best appearance, quality, throughput, and cycle time for either a new vehicle launches or a major equipment installation. This will entail validating the paint equipment process capability for fan pattern, turbine speed, e-stats, fluid flows, and color change. Often you will work with the process teams in the plant and paint suppliers in the development and continuous improvement of paint processes.

Working as a team you will collaborate and develop what we call the playbook and the launch schedule. When launching a product in a paint shop or after a major equipment replacement the playbook is our guide that defines the steps and the validations, we have to do to ensure that the equipment is both capable and meets the product requirements.

You may also get involved tuning in the sealer robotic paths for appearance, material usage and cycle time for a new vehicle launch and major equipment installations. You will not do the robot programming but will support the robot programmers as the process is validated.

At times you may be asked to act as launch coordinator for major material conversions in the assembly plants.

At times you may be asked to get involved when the Pretreatment and/or Elpo processes are not in control at one of our plants. You would assist in troubleshooting major issues and support the GM Materials teams for these type of PT/ED related issues.

When plants have issues, you could be sent out to lead coordination of data collection, practical problem solving, engaging the right resources, "one voice" communication that identifies the root cause so it can be corrected. This is infrequent but when our plants need help, we come in to assist.

At the Tech Center in Manufacturing B we have a Paint lab. There we teach robot paths and test the applications for paint and sealer material changes, product launch and major equipment changes. Initially most of the work is done offline on a laptop, then the paths are loaded into our robots and ultimately, we spray some jobs to prove out the application before we take it into the plant. Our process specialist does this work.

Most of the projects are long-term running from a month or two or up to 8 months. At times you will be required to travel. It varies but is typically 15 to 25 percent but in some cases, it can be as much as 33 percent of your time. We do try to share the load, so the travel is balanced across the entire team.

The position offers the independent self-starters the opportunity to manage their own projects. You are not tied to production so you can make your own schedule. When it makes sense, you can work from home. There will be times when you will have to work a plant shutdown and come in on weekends but that is generally infrequent.

QUALIFICATIONS:

We are looking for a minimum of three (3) years' experience specifying, commissioning or operating paint shop equipment and systems. You must have a fundamental understanding of the entire paint process. This would include PT/ED (pretreatment/Elpo), sealing, primer, and topcoat. Some level of experience working with automation cells and/or robots is preferred. You must have demonstrated the ability to work independently or with others as a member of a team. Ideally you would have some project management skills for planning and executing a project. The ability to troubleshoot processes as well as root cause identification of equipment failures is also preferred.

You must demonstrate a high level of oral and written communications skills, analytical ability and interpersonal skills that allow you to build relationships with team members and customers to solve problems and resolve issues.

You must be able to manage multiple projects and assignments with medium level of autonomy and high accountability for results. You must demonstrate solid organization, planning and problem-solving skills. You must be willing to work effectively in a manufacturing plant environment. You must demonstrate some level of leadership experience.

Finally, you must be able to demonstrate strength and/or competency in the 8 GM Behaviors of Inclusion, Think Customer, Innovate Now, Look Ahead, One Team, Be Bold, It's on Me and Winning with Integrity.

An Engineering degree or equivalent plant/paint experience is required.
