Overview
The mission of San Diego State University Global Campus is “to be a world leader in delivering innovative educational experiences to all learners, expanding opportunity and transforming lives. Our programs and technologies are ever-evolving to meet ever-changing needs; our high level of service and support is a constant.” SDSU Global Campus serves as a principal University liaison with the greater San Diego community and provides a wide variety of traditional and nontraditional, credit and noncredit educational experiences designed to fit the lifestyle and expectations of working adults and other lifelong learners. In addition, Global Campus provides a range of academic and special programs for individuals and groups at various times, in various locations, and via various modalities, including technology based programs -- throughout the year. The primary audiences include workforce, military, working adults and international constituencies.

SDSU Global Campus maintains a pool of part-time Osher Instructors. Instructors must be in the pool in order to be offered classes. Being assigned to the pool does not guarantee that you will receive an assignment. Please apply if you would like to be considered for the pool.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at San Diego State University (Osher at SDSU) is one of 124 unique Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes supported by The Bernard Osher Foundation. The Osher at SDSU offers a vibrant and diverse learning community for adults age 50 and better, with intellectually stimulating, university-quality courses, and engaging leadership and volunteer opportunities. Established in 2004, Osher at SDSU is operated by staff from SDSU's Global Campus with support from the Osher advisory board, leadership committees, members, and instructors.

Osher Instructors prepare and present current, relevant and engaging university-quality courses/lectures/programs for adults ages 50 and better, which are intellectually stimulating yet also approachable to non-subject matter experts.

All prospective instructors must submit a course proposal form for each proposed course in addition to completing this application. Course proposal forms will be emailed to you by the Osher Institute staff.


Responsibilities
The Osher Instructor is responsible for but not limited to:

Core Responsibilities

  • Adhere to the specified number and length of class meetings and location, as required for assigned course(s), workshop(s), and program(s). Any change to this commitment, other than illness or serious emergency, must be agreed to, in writing, in advance, by the program lead.
  • Refresh curriculum each time with the latest and most relevant content. Ensure that content reflects the overall program description and learning outcomes.
  • Provide handouts to Osher Staff at least two weeks prior to course start date. Materials provided must be complete, and provided in a professional format.

  • Position Specific Responsibilities

  • At the beginning of the term present a short preview/overview of course to help promote it to the prospective students in attendance.
  • Review and consider student feedback on course evaluations.
  • Adhere to all copyright laws, policies and procedures indicated in the instructors’ handbook, updated via correspondence periodically.
  • Adhere to all SDSU Research Foundation policies and procedures.


  • Qualifications
    Minimum Qualifications
    • Must be a subject matter expert in the proposed topic.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Master’s degree or higher in related field
    • Three years of teaching experience
    • Experience teaching older adults
