Job Description Summary
The Ophthalmology Service at Ryan Veterinary Hospital is seeking a full time veterinary assistant to assist with clinics, surgeries, and patient care. This is a unique opportunity to specialize in the field of veterinary ophthalmology while gaining valuable experience learning about ocular diseases and treatments.

Job Description

The Ophthalmology service at Ryan Hospital has both a medical and surgical service each day as well as, a 24-7 after-hours emergency service. This Veterinary Assistant position is primarily to assist our clinicians, nurses, residents, and students with out-patient receiving, day-time emergencies, hospitalized patients, inpatient consults, and some surgical patients. There are no after-hours responsibilities. You will become an important part of the team, learning how to expertly handle animals for an ophthalmic examination. You will be supervised daily by the senior clinician on-clinics.

This position will provide you with an opportunity to learn about common ocular diseases and their treatments in small animals and to understand the role of the veterinary ophthalmologist and veterinary nurse in veterinary medicine.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Expert patient restraint for clinicians performing ocular examinations
  • Professional communication with clients, nurses, students and clinicians during out-patient receiving.
  • Set up exam rooms/consult area for daily appointments and in-house consultations
    - unlock ophthalmology cupboards, check available equipment and supplies
    - verify equipment is in working order; communicate with clinicians if not
    - restock supplies
    - wipe down tables, equipment between appointments and at the end of the day
  • Monitor Cureatr for Ophthalmology patient arrival/discharge; consult requests; emergencies.
  • Submit pharmacy requests under clinician's supervision.
  • Deliver properly prepared and labelled samples to the lab
  • Help facilitate client discharges and enter appropriate charges, ensure clients leave with all medications dispensed from pharmacy.
  • Assist residents and students with surgical admits
  • Attend rounds and meetings including:
    - morning rounds with senior clinicians, residents, and students
    - student case presentation rounds (every two weeks)
    - monthly clinic service meetings
    -nursing meetings with Service Head (quarterly)
  • Communicate daily with Ophthalmology Nurse to ensure all required tasks are complete
  • Help in other nursing areas in the hospital as necessary during down time.
  • Discuss PTO with service before submitting for approval from Nursing Director.


Hours:

Monday through Friday 8am-4pm

Qualifications:

Veterinary Nurse Assistant A

A High School Diploma and 1-2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience working in a veterinary setting and experience with patient restraint is required. Candidates should also have experience working with difficult to handle patients, the proven ability to multitask and to follow directions. In addition candidates should also have strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Veterinary Nurse Assistant B

A High School Diploma and 2-3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience working in a veterinary setting and experience with patient restraint is required. Candidates should also have experience working with difficult to handle patients, the proven ability to multitask and to follow directions. In addition candidates should also have strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Physical Requirements: Ability to stand, kneel, bend, reach for prolonged periods of time.

Must be able to lift >25 pounds with minimal assistance.
