Practice Overview

The Payments Practice works with leading financial institutions, retailers, and payments providers that serve consumers and businesses with credit, debit, ATM, mobile, and other payments needs. Our work spans strategy development, customer experience optimization, product development, pricing and sales effectiveness, and new business design. Some examples of our recent work include:

  • Developed an enterprise-wide payments strategy for a major bank, identifying growth opportunities, areas for cross-business unit collaboration, and volume/margin risks
  • Evaluated strategic options within merchant processing and helped define a new partnership structure
  • Developed a digital payments and fraud strategy for a global quick-service restaurant
  • Using voice-of-the-customer research, supported the product development for next-generation payment solutions
  • Helped a major global payments network deliver best-in-class service to affluent cardholders

Role

The Payments Specialist will play a key role in the continued build-out of the firm's payments knowledge and intellectual capital, serving a critical role with Partners and clients. In collaboration with a team of partners, consultants and other specialists, the key responsibilities for this role will include:
  • Supporting business development activities
    • Working with the Payments Specialist Manager, Partners, and Principals to drive content for business development activities
    • Developing impactful materials for Oliver Wyman to present at industry conferences
  • Assisting project teams with analysis and insights to drive client recommendations
    • Providing support to Oliver Wyman project teams on payments topics (as needed) with a 50% billable utilization target
    • Capturing and codifying intellectual capital generated by project teams
  • Research Studies
    • Supporting the Payments Specialist Manager in conducting primary research with financial institutions or merchants to collect data on their payments businesses, including interactions with clients for interviews and follow-up Q&A
    • Identifying analyses to be conducted on the data collected
    • Assisting in the preparation of thoughtful reports which tell the story of the research, including weaving trends and business issues into the development of client-ready deliverables
  • Ongoing monitoring of new developments in the retail and corporate payments space, and providing interpretations of these trends - what is the 'so what' from these developments?
    • Helping identify topical payments issues on which to tailor Oliver Wyman intellectual capital
    • Tracking industry developments by joining expert discussions and earnings calls, sharing takeaways with the broader Oliver Wyman payments community
    • Working with the Payments Specialist Manager to research and draft insightful reports on topical payments issues
    • Co-author and manage distribution of a bi-monthly payments newsletter to 500+ clients externally
    • Co-author and manage distribution of a quarterly payments publication to 2000+ clients externally
    • Co-author and distribute biweekly Payments Update email to 150+ internal recipients
  • Be recognized as a specialist within Oliver Wyman on payments topics
    • Support Oliver Wyman's internal interest group focused on payments
    • Support the activities and agenda of the Payments Circle
    • Expand the role and influence of payments within OW by helping the Payments Specialist Manager:
      • Lead the Payments Center of Excellence
      • Track the revenue and pipeline, and create appropriate management reporting

Desired Skills and Experience

We are looking for a high-performing Consultant or Senior Consultant (preferably based in the New York office) with the following skills:
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, together with quantitative aptitude, and proven research capabilities
  • Strong ownership mentality and ability to multi-task with limited supervision
  • Knowledge of payments industry from past work or academic experience (preferred but not required)
  • Strong consulting skills including the ability to develop compelling client-ready materials
  • Strong proficiency with Excel, PowerPoint, and Word, along with knowledge of technologies beyond MS Office Suite, including intranet, social media, etc.

We are interested in candidates with a strong interest in and desire to build expertise in the dynamic Payments field. Preference will be shown to candidates with prior payments consulting experience (especially related to credit, debit, prepaid, and/or mobile payments).
