SUMMARY

  • RN Intern will align individual learning objectives from the Individual Success Plan (ISP) with course and the nursing program objectives.
  • Review course objectives and learning needs with mentor to develop strategies to meet them.
  • Maintain professional behavior in the settings at all times including professional dress, professional ethics, and professional communications.
  • Demonstrate increasing competency while incorporating evidence-based practice guidelines.
  • Adhere to professional attire that is in accordance with VOACC requirements.
  • Function in the role of the nursing professional under the guidance of the VOACC mentor/preceptor.
  • Participate in pre-/mid-/post- practice experience conferences with faculty and mentor/preceptor, if applicable.
  • All clinical hours must be completed during the specified course.
  • Successfully complete mentor/preceptor, faculty, site, and course-related evaluations.
  • serve as a member of the Interdisciplinary Team and participate in the ISP planning and implementation processes as required per regulations,
  • Assess person served on every shift and report any changes in health status immediately
  • Understand the basic fundamentals of nursing and the DC Nurse Practice Act
  • Advocate for the person served and coordinate with other multidisciplinary team members regarding optimal treatment for person served.
  • provide general DC programs support when requested (per regulations)
  • Remain compliant with regulations of regulatory bodies (CARF, DDS, DC Board of Nursing, VOA, etc.) within the Scope of his/her highest Nursing Practice.
PRINCIPLE ACTIVITIES:

Clinical
  • RN Intern to develop rapport with each person receiving nursing care. Demonstrate respectful interactions with high-quality customer service skills at all times.
  • Participate and lead in the safe and initial admission process, evaluation and treatment plan designed for each person admitted to this program within safe and regulated manners with mentors guidance.
  • Participate as a member of the Interdisciplinary Team providing general health counseling, review of medical procedures, medication and medical options with the person, their family, guardian and staff with mentors guidance.
  • The RN Intern must adhere to HIPAA regulated guidelines in all patient documentation and interaction.
  • RN Intern maintain up-to-date knowledge of Volunteers of America Chesapeakes and Carolinas policies and procedures.
  • RN Intern must be knowledgeable of the rules and regulations of the relevant service environments including ICFs, Waiver, Medical Respite, and Res Hab and adhere to the program guiding principles.

EFFECT ON END RESULT:
  • To ensure needs of the person supported, as identified by the IDT, are met and individual satisfaction is achieved.
  • To ensure that the program is operated in compliance within the Scope of Work, Volunteers of America Chesapeakes policies and procedures, licensing and ICF/ Medicaid waiver regulations.

  • Be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing with registration and license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and/or Virginia.
  • Attend an AACN (American Association of Colleges of Nursing) Accredited school of nursing
  • Must hold and active and non-restrictive RN license.
  • Be able to read, write, and speak the English language and have the ability to communicate effectively with the people to whom services are provided and all stakeholders.
  • Must be enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate college or university.
  • Must be able to commit to a full semester, at least 20 hours per week (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter)
  • Provide a resume and 300-word cover letter, indicating internship choice and reason why VOACC is a preferred site/organization.
  • Meet the application submission deadline, including all required information/documentation.
  • Must have acceptable Criminal Background check, and Negative Drug Screening per VOACC policy.
  • Exceptions may be made for internships required for the attainment of a professional certification under the guidance of a recognized professional certification board.

Note: Licensed RN Interns will keep their registrations and license(s), and CPR card in good standing at all times.

Ideal interns will demonstrate the following:
  • Experience with, or able to learn, software
  • Detail oriented administrative abilities and accurate data entry experience
  • Ability to develop informational reporting based on raw data requests
  • Proficiency in Windows, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Desktop Publishing
  • Discrete, trustworthy with strong business integrity and high degree of confidentiality
  • Able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and adapt to changing priorities
  • Excellent filing skills are required, and strong organizational skills
  • Professional and customer service-oriented demeanor, comfortable working with all levels of employees
  • Motivated self-starter who can work independently and in team environment
  • Excellent business phone etiquette
  • Excellent editing, spelling, grammar and punctuation skills
  • Ability to understand and document all healthcare and medical needs as required by all regulated licensing and monitoring entities.
  • Ability to read, interpret, comply with, and document clinical paperwork such as safety rules, medical orders, admission and discharge instructions, operating and maintenance instructions, and policy/ procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports with mentor and correspondence in a timely manner.
  • Ability to perform basic computer and office equipment skills (EMR and Word) with mentor.
  • Ability to utilize the RN scope of practice regulations for the District of Columbia to present accurate health care information in one-to-one and small group situations with people supported, families, guardians, and other medical professionals within the interdisciplinary team.
  • Attend all meetings with mentor scheduled by the Director of Nursing Services and the IDD Program Manager (As needed)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical requirements described below are representative of those that must be met by an intern to successfully perform the essential duties of the internship program. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties.
  • The ability to safely operate a motor vehicle to transport oneself, people and program supplies as necessary.
  • The ability to operate office equipment requiring continuous or repetitive hand/arm movement.
  • The ability to remain in a sitting position for extended periods of time.
  • The physical ability to travel to assigned locations, stand, stoop, bend, reach, pull, push, lift, grasp, climb, talk, see, hear and perform basic and light home maintenance activities, and operate office equipment.
  • The physical ability to move and lift light objects up to 30 pounds such as mail, supplies, files, and equipment.
