Position Overview

The Metallurgical Scientist is a key member of Novelis' Metallurgy Cluster in the Product and Processing Organization of Global R&T having strong fundamental understanding of wrought aluminum products and processing technologies. The role requires experience in product development for solidification (continuous casting as well as direct chill casting), homogenization, hot rolling, cold rolling solutionizing, etc. preferably with process modeling capability and familiarity with state-of-the-art metallurgical software packages. The Scientist will work with and lead multi-disciplinary teams to combine metallurgical techniques with other approaches for maximum impact on the speed and depth of materials research. The Scientist will also support research activities seeking to improve processes for Novelis' current aluminum flat rolled products with enhanced combinations of performance, efficiency and recyclability. Experience and knowledge of using process parameters such as solidification rate to engineer microstructure - property relationships using a variety of techniques is also preferred.
Responsibilities & Qualifications

Responsibilities:

  • Act as company-wide subject matter expert in the area of casting and solidification processes as they impact product development, in support of global R&D projects
  • Lead and guide associated experimental programs that provide supporting data for understanding critical to the development of wrought aluminum products
  • Define and lead projects to develop and apply advanced technologies to address critical product and process development challenges
  • Partner with a wide range of other internal specialists, e.g., in product metallurgy, rolling process, modeling, characterization, manufacturing, corrosion, forming, joining and surface engineering
  • Establish and lead supporting partnerships with universities and other external collaborators
  • Support wider adoption and application of metallurgical modeling and characterization tools amongst other specialists
Qualifications
  • PhD in metallurgy, metallurgical engineering or materials science/engineering
  • Good balance of experimental experience in non-equilibrium solidification (chemical metallurgy) as well as solid state processing and process modeling
  • Experience in physical metallurgy (including solidification) in order to link chemistry and process variables to microstructure / properties and performance of wrought products
  • Experience with alloy design and calculation of phase diagrams (CALPHAD) including the prediction of multi-component phase diagrams using thermodynamic / kinetic modeling software such as ThermoCalc, JMatPro, DEFORM,
  • Technical leadership experience in an R&D setting with demonstration of good project management skills, and technical communication skills is a plus
  • Broad science and engineering background and ability to connect knowledge across multiple disciplines
  • Capability to thrive in team environment, communicate well, and to engage and influence wide variety of stakeholders throughout the organization
  • International outlook and desire to travel to other Novelis or customer locations and build a global network of relationships across organizations
