Position Summary

Under the direction of the Senior Associate Athletics Director of Marketing & New Media, the Marketing Specialist will manage the marketing efforts for SDSU men's and women's soccer, baseball, and lacrosse. The position will also manage all Aztec Village planning and set up for SDSU football home games. Incumbent will serve as the game day producer for women's basketball and assist with women's basketball marketing, as well as help run all game day promotions for men's basketball. The position will help manage the Aztec Kids Club, Aztec Rewards, and SDSU Aztecs mobile app. Incumbent will also act as the Marketing liaison to the Business Office, preparing and coordinating all necessary paperwork.

This is a full time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end on or before June 30, 2023, with the possibility of reappointment. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Education and Experience

Entry to the first level within this classification requires knowledge of the fundamentals of public affairs and/or media relations, and/or some exposure to marketing and marketing research. This background normally is obtained through a college degree, which includes relevant coursework in the field, and up to two years of related professional or technical experience. In addition, strong written and verbal communication skills with a solid foundation in grammar, spelling, and the composition of various communication vehicles are essential to initial entry to this classification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least two years of full-time experience in a collegiate athletics marketing environment
  • At least 6 months experience working with external vendors and contracts
  • Demonstrated marketing experience with the sports of baseball, soccer, and/or lacrosse
  • Working knowledge of and ability to:
    • Effectively supervise students and/or part-time staff
    • Utilize Photoshop or InDesign
    • Utilize social/new media
  • Ability to be creative and think outside the box to effectively market multiple sports teams
  • Excellent organizational skills, oral/written communication skills, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work both independently and in coordination with professional colleagues
  • Demonstrated ability to make complex decisions and problem solve
  • Ability to work outside of normal working hours, including nights and weekends

Specialized Skills
  • Working knowledge of and ability to design and implement marketing plans for sports and manage multiple tasks/projects simultaneously
  • Proficiency in basic office support software (Microsoft Office Suite)

Compliance with all NCAA, conference, and San Diego State University rules, policies and procedures is of paramount importance to the university. All position responsibilities should be carried out in full compliance with all such rules and regulations.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources. Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $3,750 per month.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,515- $6,358 per month.

SDSU COVID-19 Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. An individual is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose of a two-shot vaccine or two weeks after the first dose of a single-shot vaccine.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.

The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
