About the Department:

The School of Law at SMU was established in February 1925. Highlighting the celebration of its 75th year, SMU School of Law was named Dedman School of Law in 2001 in honor of Dallas benefactors Nancy and Robert H. Dedman, Sr., and their family. With more than 15,000 graduates, SMU Dedman School of Law has a national and international reputation of training prominent lawyers in both law and business. About the Position:

The Marketing and Communications Specialist is responsible for the graphic design of external electronic and print materials relating to SMU Dedman School of Law's (law community and alumni) programs and events. The Marketing and Communications Specialist is also responsible for managing the law school website including writing content and advanced page building/edits, social media graphics/posts as needed, and photography needs.

Essential Functions:

  • Electronic and Print Marketing Materials: Primary responsibility to design all marketing and communications electronic materials primarily, and print materials relating to SMU Dedman School of Law and Alumni Relations, and its programs and events. Will work closely with the Director of External Relations, and the Director of Alumni Relations (as needed) to produce the annual law school alumni magazine; email invitations and announcements; alumni and SMU Law enewsletters; printed flyers, advertisements, invitations, as needed; relating to conferences, lectures, events, and activities targeted to alumni, faculty, students, and staff. Responsibility of the Marketing and Communications Specialist: Will work closely with the Director of External Relations regarding the content of all print and electronic materials, but the primary design and creative responsibility will rest with this position. May also write and edit some of the marketing and communications materials for the law school as needed.
  • Law School Website and Social Media: Manage the law school website including updating/editing the content and advanced page building, as needed, (updating with the SMU branding guidelines) to keep the website content and look and feel fresh. Assist Social Media Manager as needed writing social media posts that link back to a story on the website when possible.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Will provide assistance with law school events, including managing audio and visual needs, light photography, and any developing needed signage. In addition, the Marketing and Communications Specialist may interact with outside vendors such as printers, and freelance designers and proofreaders.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's is required. Preferably degree in creative agency/corporate work, digital marketing, website content development, journalism.

A minimum of three (3) years of experience in design, layout, and writing/editing is essential. Candidate with the ability to utilize Sitecore content management system to make website edits and advanced page building is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate with social media experience and content/creative writing skills are preferred. Must also demonstrate strong level of initiative and be able to prioritize, and manage work flow and deadlines in a fast-paced office with numerous competing demands. Candidate must be a team player who is excellent at multi-tasking. Candidate must demonstrate to be detail-oriented, organized, and self-starter. Candidate must also be able to take direction and feed-back on projects.

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions.

Software Skills: Candidate must have demonstrated excellence with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite (utilizing graphics that begin in InDesign), website content management system (preferred), all on Macintosh platform. Candidate must have experience with digital communications platforms: Sitecore content management system for Website (preferred) (HTML skills are helpful), Social Media (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, etc.) and email layout software (such as MailChimp).
