Manufacturing Engineer Assembly Engines

Opportunity

Technical leader responsible for all engineering project work, completes assignments requiring a high degree of technical competence, and leads best practices in all activities revolving around engine assembly processes.  Involved in all engineering functions in engine assembly driving continuous improvement & cost reduction initiatives, driving implementation of quality initiatives, and maintaining control plans and Process Failure Mode Analysis documents.  This position will also provide technical assistance cross-functionally, mentor younger engineers and technicians in the department, and effectively executes projects by applying mature new technology platforms independently.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Troubleshoot engine or component production problems requiring a high degree of technical competence. When a production department has problems manufacturing per engineering print tolerances or specifications, investigate immediate problems, make informed decisions and recommendations on how to proceed, and coordinate the efforts of Production, Inspection/Quality, and Maintenance supervision until problem is resolved.
  • Create, communicate, and drive consistent improvements to present manufacturing operations and suggest and implement changes in method, machines, or machine layout. These changes should reduce cost and/or improve product flow to assure maximum quantity and quality from production equipment.
  • Develop and setup new equipment and processes to effectively produce process capability requirements and, in turn, setting up control charts for critical operations to verify 100% conformance to meeting quality requirements.
  • Readily identifies potential risks or roadblocks and provides solutions to maintain business goals.
  • Serve as a Project Manager and cross-functional liaison for new product launches in assembly in terms of reviewing equipment changes, new equipment procurement, creating and managing the manufacturing and capacity planning, and driving actions for production launch of the product into the assembly process.
  • Develop proficient, technical competence on equipment, automation, and robotic systems used in assembly operations.
  • Manage manufacturing engineering activities for new process and product introduction to assure schedules are met and proper equipment and tooling is available.
  • Develop and drive justification of Capital Planning Projects involving capacity, quality, and cost reduction opportunities.  Provide effective verbal and written communication to justify in a concise manner with data to support key technical decisions.
  • Technical and Leadership resource in terms of developing and managing changes on machines including tooling/fixture specifications and procurement, as required, in the assigned area responsibility.  
  • Personally demonstrate and drive the Kohler Core Competencies.

Supervisory Relationships:

  • Reports to Superintendent of Assembly Operations, Hattiesburg
  • Receives general direction, exercises considerable discretion as to personal work details with other technical personnel.

Skills/Requirements

Education:  Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology required.

Experience: Candidates typically has 7 or more years of work experience in a technical and complex industry of manufacturing components and systems.  Experience with manufacturing engines or engine components in a high paced production environment preferred.

Skills:  Experience in production of small engines or equivalent technology, along with technical competence on equipment design, robotic equipment, problem solving, and/or experience with programming PLC systems is considered a plus.                 

 As an essential member of the Manufacturing Engineering team, you will have the opportunity to apply your unique engineering skills drive key improvements and lasting results for key business processes and technologies.  Your responsibilities will include creating and managing project plans, driving activities surrounding process development, driving process and procedural changes, managing new production launches, and initiating and driving procurement of Capital Equipment.
