Description:

Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean for Education, the Learning Specialist in the Office of Academic Success (OAS) is a hands-on instructional and management role, focused on developing and implementing academic interventions to improve student academic performance. OAS helps students succeed in medical school by providing academic counseling, education on learning strategies, and tools to face common challenges such as time management, organization, and test-taking issues.

Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

* Provides direct academic support services, including individual and group consultations on academic skills, learning strategies, time management, and stress management. Provides outreach and follow-up with students as needed.

* Interprets professional review assessments and apply them in the form of learning/study strategy recommendations for students.

* Solicits data collection to continuously evaluate the learning needs of the medical student population and address such needs by developing workshops, study skills programs, study plans, large group sessions, webinars, resources, and website content that address time management, organization, retention, stress management, and other learning concerns common among medical students.

* Co-teaches in Pre-matriculation, Knowledge Consolidation, and Intensive Study Period courses by holding workshops and individual student meetings.

* Coordinates and hosts academic support team meetings for each course during the first two years of the program.

* Develops academic action plans and act at the main case manager for students who require academic remediation.

* Acts as the Disability Service Coordinator, managing applications for and implementing disability-related accommodations in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

* Works closely with the Offices of Student Affairs, Curriculum Support, course directors, and faculty members to triage students to various forms of support services.

Qualifications:

* Master's Degree in educational or cognitive psychology with specialization in learning and remediation required.

* Experience working in higher education or educational psychology field required.

* Experience in medical education or other health sciences education preferred.

* Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written) and the ability to identify and solve problems essential.

* Excellent knowledge of computer software programs (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required.

* Must have proficiency in public speaking and facilitating and conducting small and large group sessions with students.

* Must demonstrate cultural competence and the ability to work with students from diverse populations.

* Must be able to handle a busy caseload and spontaneous work demands while also overseeing long-term projects that require advanced planning.

* Must demonstrate a commitment to proactive student development, have a strong work ethic, be team-oriented and willing to collaborate.

* Familiarity with ethics related to FERPA, confidentiality, and other laws governing communication in an educational setting preferred
