Alliant Energy is looking for a Lead Transport Network Engineer to join our team in either Madison, WI or Cedar Rapids, IA.

Our team gets hands-on experience with optical networking, fiber planning and construction, microwave route planning and development, tower construction and maintenance, FCC interfaces and studies, SCADA connections, smart-grid and smart-metering and all of the other aspects of providing a data overlay to a functional power and gas operation.

We work in a complex environment where your specific expertise can be applied, and where you can also get involved with different applications that may challenge and enrich your view of communications technology.

This position could travel up to 20% of time.

What you will do:
  • Design, deploy, and support networks involving IPsec VPNs, BGP/MPLS/OSPF topologies and combined transport mediums on a wide variety of equipment.
  • Assist in the design and administration of network systems including microwave, fiber optics, leased circuits, packet radio, spread spectrum and other carrier and wireless technologies.
  • Assist with ongoing maintenance and documentation of connected operational sites and evolving IoT elements.
  • Prepare and maintain designs including accurate documents, diagrams, and records.
  • Help prepare requisitions, purchase orders, and other telecommunication requests.
  • Assist with ensuring compliance to government rules and regulations.
  • Assist customers with the preparation of telecommunication project requests to ensure that all appropriate technical requirements are identified.
  • Respond to employee questions, help tackle, and make recommendations concerning telecommunications services.
Required Qualifications
  • 6 + years of experience in telecommunications, data networks, or information technology.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Math, or Information Technology and 6 + years of experience in telecommunications, data networks, or information technology.
  • Detailed understanding of TCP/IP, IPv4/IPv6, ISDN, and other common network protocols
  • Experience with layer 1, 2, 3 technologies, including OTN, MPLS, BGP, OSPF.
  • Experience with optical networking or DWDM equipment.
  • Experience or certifications with routing and switching equipment; Cisco, Juniper, or Arista.
  • Understanding of QoS and other traffic control strategies.
  • Experience with TDM/SONET/OTN equipment and services.
  • Experience with private microwave systems from vendors like Aviat, Adtran and NEC.
  • Experience with cloud architectures and network automation.
  • Working knowledge of information technology networking.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills
  • Comfortable working in a Unix server environment.
  • Python scripting and automation.
