Position Information: Description

This position is responsible for providing high-quality IT support to the University of North Dakota campus and its constituents and for ensuring all support is provided in a timely customer focused manner.  This position provides support for specialized applications, administers active directory, automates installations, provides high level application support, supervises the ResNet and Systems Administrations student employees, and performs duties of the Systems and Applications Manager in their absence.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Server and Specialized Application Support:
    • Monitor the needs of the departments to determine availability and needs for application upgrades
    • Design, build, and manage server solutions across cloud and virtual environments
    • Work with vendors to perform upgrades to the server side of the application
    • Coordinate other University Information Technology staff to perform upgrades on the client side of the application
    • Perform periodic system backups to the backup server
    • Ensure that systems and documents are available during outages by redundancy of data and servers
    • Create and maintain documentation on all servers and review documentation on other systems regularly
    • Ensure system security is performed and reviewed to organizational and industry standards as well as PCI compliance, HIPPA, and FERPA standards
    • Ensure that systems are updated and patched in a timely manner
    • Verify completion of server backups according to schedule
    • Participates in on-call rotation
    • Research new products and services that may benefit supported departments
    • Create, manage and audit elevated Active Directory accounts and groups
  • Enterprise Application Administration:
    • Utilize scripts to perform automation
    • Administer, monitor, and maintain Enterprise Applications for UND
    • Research and recommend hardware and software development, purchase, and use to supervisor
    • Troubleshoot and resolve software and connectivity problems, including user access and component configuration
    • Work as a team member with other UIT staff, as well as the networking and 3rd party vendors to ensure usability, connectivity and compatibility between systems
    • Document system/application problems and resolutions for future reference
    • Conduct technical research on system/application upgrades to determine feasibility, cost, time required, and compatibility with current system
  • Specialty Applications:
    • Respond to users’ technical issues in person, remote support, on the phone, and through email.
    • Train University Information Technology staff on specialty systems
    • Troubleshoot complex specialty application problems while keeping the user informed.
    • Research and implement new technologies.
    • Document systems and processes.
    • Complete support tickets in a timely manner.
  • Supervision and Project Management:
    • Supervise systems administration student employees
    • Supervise systems administration employees
    • Train and mentor full-time and student staff
    • Oversee ResNet staffing and services
    • Lead the recruitment and hiring processes of student employees
    • Project management for student projects
  • Other Duties:
    • Complete timesheets in a timely manner
    • Document and update projects in TeamDynamix to track project progress
    • Develop and maintain contact with people in key positions pertinent to other duties and responsibilities
    • Attend conferences, webinars, and seminars
    • Remain as current as possible with new technology
    • Attend departmental meetings
    • Serve on campus-wide committees and participate in campus-wide meetings when applicable
    • Maintain confidential information in all aspects of position in accordance with applicable compliance requirements (FERPA, HIPPA, PCI Compliance, etc.)

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science or related field plus two years directly related experience OR Associate degree plus three years directly related experience OR 6 years directly related work experience
  • Minimum of three years experience supporting and troubleshooting Windows computers, specialty hardware and software
  • Experience working in a complex multi-user IT environment
  • Experience troubleshooting and supporting specialty hardware and software
  • Experience managing Windows Server 2012 and later
  • Experience creating and maintaining documentation, training and mentoring employees
  • Experience with OSI model and basic network troubleshooting, including routing, switching, and Ethernet protocols
  • Experience with client/server architecture
  • Must be able to be onsite for management duties and network troubleshooting, at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, ND
  • Successful completion of criminal history records check.

  • Experience working in an environment required to maintain confidentiality such as HIPAA, FERPA, and PCI Compliance
  • Experience working with Enterprise Virtualization solution
  • Experience with Linux Servers
  • Experience with ResNet
  • Experience with server-based databases
  • Experience working in Higher Education
  • Experience with cloud hosting platforms such as Azure, or AWS
  • Experience with SaaS platforms
Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification

$60,000-$62,000/year; exempt; benefited; full-time
