PRIMARY POSITION FUNCTION/SUMMARY:

SHIELD Illinois is a screening testing program and infrastructure that deploys the University of Illinois' innovative saliva test across the state. We save lives by curbing the spread of COVID-19, while reducing productivity loss and prioritizing employee wellbeing. SHIELD Illinois uses cutting-edge PCR technology and robotics to deliver fast reliable results to patients. We strive to have a positive impact on patients' lives across Illinois by making complicated testing and long turnaround times a thing of the past. The function of this position is to provide support to labs within the following locations in Illinois: Rockford, North Chicago, and Springfield. The incumbent of this position will be able to assist with our COVID-19 molecular testing section at our clinical laboratories within the following locations in Illinois: Rockford, North Chicago, and Springfield. The function requires an individual that is able to follow standard operating procedures, take direction easily, and have a focus on maintaining a safe and effective laboratory.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Ensure all lab processors follow the below duties and procedures:

  • Proper and safe handling of infectious substances
  • Identify and check-in saliva samples
  • Assist and maintain stock of laboratory supplies
  • Remove laboratory waste and packaging for safe disposal
  • Clean and disinfect laboratory spaces and equipment
  • Unpack laboratory supplies and remove supply boxes from the laboratory
  • Provide proper documentation for the Lab General Supervisor to review
  • Take direction from the Lab General Supervisor and Medical Lab Scientists in the clinical molecular laboratory
  • Clean and disinfect laboratory spaces and equipment
  • Unpack testing supplies and samples
  • Remove packaging and waste from the laboratory
  • Uphold a safe work environment by wearing required PPE
  • Handle bodily fluids that may contain COVID-19 safely

QUALIFICATIONS

Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Based on institutional requirements, current/valid State of Illinois driver's license for the type of vehicle(s) to be operated.

Preferred
  • Some coursework in Molecular Biology

Successful Candidates will have
  • Ability and willingness to follow simple instructions

Physical Demands
  • Position involves lifting items weighing up to 50 lbs

This is a full-time Civil Service Public Health Response Specialist position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
