This position:

  • Performs lead work in plant and landscape maintenance of park and right-of-way sites, equipment and irrigation
  • Monitors and oversees plant health and maintenance of the Rose and Platt Gardens
  • Is performed with a great deal of independent judgment
  • Works four-10 hr shifts

Essential Functions

Coordinates with maintenance workers to complete tasks assigned. Exhibits a high level of skill in work performed. Conducts safety training for crew. Ensures employees are able to perform work independently, efficiently, and safely. Performs administrative duties in the supervisor's absence. Participates in seasonal maintenance worker interview processes and makes hiring recommendations. (50%)

Plants, prunes, weeds, applies chemicals and ensure the health and well-being of plants and gardens. (30%)

Monitors and repairs assigned irrigation systems. Maintains an efficient water level at assigned garden pools, and ensures structural integrity. (10%)

Processes work orders in a timely manner. Re-designs shrub beds. Oversees Rose Garden maintenance such as plant health, annual pruning, and diagnosing plant problems. (10%)

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 3 years of progressively responsible experience working in parks maintenance including:
    • plant care such as pruning, planting, transplanting, diagnosing plant and soil problems
    • installing, troubleshooting and repairing irrigation systems
    • mixing and applying chemicals
    • using a variety of hand and power-operated equipment
Working knowledge of:
  • Standard safety practices related to relevant tools and equipment; horticulture, plant health, maintenance, soils
  • Integrated pest management principles for treating disease, insects and weeds;
  • Right of way safety
  • Chemical application and related safety procedures
  • Irrigation systems and maintenance
Ability to:
  • Operate and provide training in the safe use of vehicles, heavy equipment, power and hand tools
  • Read blueprints, schematic diagrams and technical manuals
  • Schedule multiple projects concurrently
  • Safely utilize related protective gear and safety equipment
  • Operate a computer with demonstrated proficiency using related database, word processing, and spreadsheet software applications at an appropriate level for efficient job performance
  • Display an attitude of cooperation and work harmoniously with all levels of City of Boise employees and the public
  • Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance
  • Complete assignments in a timely fashion
  • Understand and comply with all rules, policies and regulations
  • Maintain prompt and regular attendance, and perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Capable of operating vehicles safely and having an acceptable driving record
Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
  • Associate's degree in Horticulture, Biology, or related field
  • 2 years of experience performing park maintenance in a lead role
  • Possession of related certifications such as:
    • Master Gardener Certification
    • Idaho Landscape Certified Horticulture Technician
Ability to:
  • Set up safe ROW work zones in compliance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, work zone safety training
  • Operate a wide variety of equipment such as backhoes, skid steers, trucks, chain saws, hand and power tools
Licensing And Other Requirements
  • Valid Idaho driver's license
  • State of Idaho Professional Applicator license in Ornamental Herbicide, Law and Safety, or Ornamental Insecticide category within six months of employment
  • ATSSA Registered Flagger certification
  • OSHA General Industry 10 Hour Course Certification
  • Must be able to obtain the following certifications offered through the City of Boise within six months of employment:
    • Erosion Control Responsible Person (RP) Certification
    • CPR/First Aid Certification
    • Defensive Driving Certification
Special Requirements
Applicants must be able to pass:
  • City of Boise background check processes including a criminal history check and reference checks in accordance with the City of Boise Hiring Process Regulation
  • Driving Record Check

Physical Efforts
While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently lifting/carrying up to 20 pounds, occasionally lifting/carrying up to 35 pounds and rarely lifting/carrying up to 100 pounds. Also, the employee is frequently pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds, occasionally pushing/pulling up to 75 pounds and rarely pushing/pulling up to 100 pounds. The noise level is frequently moderate, occasionally loud and rarely very loud. Work includes the sensory ability to talk, hear, smell and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, run, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb and balance. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.

Working Environment
The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, in wet and humid conditions, areas of dust, odors, mist and gases or other airborne matter. Employees are exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards, work in/at heights and confined spaces. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria, bodily fluids and chemicals. Employees must work in and around uneven walking paths, traffic, ice and snow, summer heat, rain, wind, and stinging insects. exposure to stinging insects, poison ivy/oak.
This position works: when called out for alarms and work events which can occur any time day or night.
