More specifically, the individual hired for this open Laboratory research assistant position will work in the lab of Dr. Andrea Hohmann, Ph.D.

Job Summary

The Hohmann Laboratory is focused on identifying novel therapeutic strategies for suppressing pain that lack abuse liability and unwanted side effects. The approaches used in the laboratory include behavioral, neurophysiological, molecular/biochemical, histology, immunostaining, microscopy and behavior studies.

The laboratory research specialist conducts behavioral experiments with rats and mice, operates behavioral-testing equipment (particularly for intravenous drug self-administration and conditioned place preference studies), and maintains behavioral equipment. Handles and tests rats, flushes intravenous jugular catheters, assists with animal surgeries, maintains data records and testing equipment, performs post- surgical monitoring of animal health status, and assists with data entry and creating graphical displays. Collaborates with other labs regarding experiments conducted and the results obtained to assess and recommend potential changes to research projects. Perform procedures for the lab to assess neuropathology of animals.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a science related field and three years of laboratory research experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in a science related field.

Working Conditions / Demands

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
