Hoxworth Blood Center seeks a Lab Associate to assist with facilities and equipment maintenance in the Cellular Therapies department. The department provides hematopoietic stem cell processing services to hospital transplant programs and to pharmaceutical companies, and manufactures innovative blood cell products for clinical trials. The Lab Associate will assist with cleaning and maintenance of a certified cleanroom laboratory and associated support space, assist with calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment, assist with supply management, and perform other operational support tasks as needed.

The successful candidate must be comfortable working in an environment where blood products are processed and must complete assigned trainings, which may include laboratory safety, IT security, and HIPAA. Must comply with all policies and procedures.

Essential Functions
    Supervise, train, assist and/or instruct faculty and students using laboratory facilities.Monitor activities within designated laboratories.Maintain all laboratory equipment, including ordering of supplies; perform repair work, and schedule professional repair.Assist faculty on project feasibility and design.Administer safety programs.Act as liaison with local industry regarding specifications and availability of new and used laboratory equipment.Recommend space and equipment assignments as requested and resolve any conflicts for space and equipment.

Required Education
  • Associate's Degree.
  • Three (3) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.
Required Experience

One (1) year of experience in an area of technical specialty.

Additional Qualifications Considered
  • Experience working in a laboratory environment.
  • Experience in the set-up, operation and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of current laboratory safety and OSHA standards.
  • Experience in the use of computers and ability to learn different laboratory software packages.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
