The Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Colorado Boulder seeks applicants for a non tenure-track position of Instructor or Senior Instructor. (Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor)
This role is anticipated to begin in January or August of 2023. Who We Are

The Department of Applied Mathematics has its origins in the turn of the 20th century, and evolved out of the Department of Engineering Mathematics. The department teaches thousands of students and has a major research presence in computational and physical/biological mathematics and the statistical sciences. The faculty is composed of 21 tenured or tenure track faculty and nine full time instructors. In addition, the department is home to more than 90 graduate students including approximately 45 teaching assistants, about 160 applied math majors, 130 statistics and data science majors, 100 minors and a thriving accelerated Bachelor’s/Master’s 5-year program.
The department strives to be a leading program of applied mathematics. In 2018, the US News & World Report ranked the unit’s graduate program 14th in the nation. The unit also ranked positively in many measures by the National Research Council in its 2010 decadal survey.
Our faculty have won numerous awards including: four fellows of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, two fellows of the American Mathematical Society, two fellows of the American Physical Society, two Guggenheim Fellows, American Statistical Association Fellow, Sloan Fellow, and CU-Boulder Hazel Barnes Prize winners, Professor of Distinction, winners of numerous CU-Boulder faculty awards, and two distinguished research lecturers.
Instructors compose the core of the department’s full-time teaching faculty team and play a fundamental role in the department’s educational mission.


What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Teach a wide range of applied math, statistics, and data science courses at the undergraduate, and possibly the graduate, level.
  • Coordinate large, multi-section courses in Calculus 1, Calculus 2, Calculus 3, and Differential Equations/Linear Algebra; assist with the development of curricula materials.
  • Advise/mentor undergraduate Applied Math majors and/or Statistics and Data Science majors.


What You Should Know

  • The initial appointment is for a term of three years, with contract renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance.
  • The teaching requirement for this appointment is 5 semester courses per academic year.
  • All University of Colorado Boulder employees is required to comply with the campus COVID-19 vaccine requirement. New employees must provide proof of vaccination or receive a medical or religious exemption within 30 days of employment.


What We Can Offer

Hiring at the rank of Assistant or Associate Teaching professor depending upon experience.
The salary for this 75% Instructor / Senior Instructor appointment is $80,000- 85,000 annually.

What We Require

  • Assistant Teaching Professor:
    • A PhD in the Mathematical Sciences, or a closely related field and at least two semesters of University-level teaching, which may have been obtained while pursuing your PhD.
  • Associate Teaching Professor:
    • A PhD in the Mathematical Sciences, or a closely related field and at least two semesters of University-level teaching, which may have been obtained while pursuing your PhD.
    • At least 3 years of teaching, industry, or post-doctoral experience.


What You Will Need

  • Candidate must have a demonstrated ability to teach University-level Applied Mathematics courses, as well as the ability to work with a broad spectrum of both graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Candidate must also have experience with Python and R programming languages.
  • Ability to teach university-level applied mathematics, statistics, and data science courses
