Instructor/Lecturer in Veterinary Clinical Pathology

The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at Veterinary Specialty Center

Full-time, 100% (12-month basis)

The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for an Instructor/Lecturer faculty position in Veterinary Clinical Pathology to be located in the Chicagoland, IL, area. The satellite clinical pathology laboratory is part of the VDL of the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. The successful candidate will function in the areas of diagnostic services, teaching and scholarly activity. This position is split between the satellite clinical pathology laboratory and the Zoological Pathology Program (ZPP), remote sections of the University of Illinois Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory located in the Chicago area. The satellite clinical pathology laboratory is housed in and provides full-service testing for a large veterinary specialty practice located in Bannockburn, IL. The VDL is accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD). The successful candidate will also hold an appointment within the Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine at the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Requirements : DVM or equivalent, ACVP board certification or eligibility in anatomic pathology, and ACVP board certification or eligibility in clinical pathology (i.e., double boarded or double boards eligibility). Highly preferred qualifications include experience in pathology of non-domestic species, experience in diagnostic veterinary medicine, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Duties : ZPP Service duties will include diagnostic evaluations and clinical pathology consultations with referring veterinarians and consulting biologists as well as periodic necropsy duty and evaluation of histopathology cases. Teaching duties will include instruction of veterinary students, residents (both pathology and clinical zoological / wildlife), and graduate students as well as offering continuing education for technical and veterinary staff of wildlife conservation organizations (outreach). Creative scholarly activity will depend on the candidate's interests and may range from development and validation of diagnostic tests in non-domestic species to collaborative research focused on clinical pathology support for in situ and ex situ conservation programs. The successful candidate will be expected, in collaboration with ZPP Chief, to engage with the zoological community and identify opportunities for broadening client base and advancing the field of zoological and wildlife clinical pathology.

Clinical pathology duties at the satellite VDL will include diagnostic service within the laboratory, primarily evaluation and interpretation of cytologic and hematologic specimens. The successful candidate will provide high quality results with rapid turnaround time and consult with veterinarians, house officers, and staff of the associated veterinary practice as needed. Maintenance of laboratory standards and working conditions that comply with AAVLD and University of Illinois requirements is expected. Duties may also include training of Illinois veterinary students and/or house officers, seminars/continuing education for veterinary professionals affiliated with the specialty hospital, and assistance with management of technical staff and the laboratory as needed.
