Student Affairs Technology serves as the IT department for a variety of Student Affairs units on the campus to provide better efficiency, broader support, and operational resiliency, as well as create richer employment environment for the IT staff. Job Summary
This position provides end user, workstation, server, application, and systems support to Student Services units. Duties & Responsibilities for Infrastructure Specialist

  • Hardware and System Software
    • Serve as technology consultants and innovators for Student Services staff and departments
    • Install and configure workstations, servers, and mobile devices
    • Maintain patching, security, and other endpoint management of workstations and servers
    • Maintain critical administrative infrastructure, including file, print, web, database servers, and specialized vendor applications
    • Implement migration plans for major software version upgrades and replace outdated technologies with new and current technologies
  • Support
    • Provide assistance to help desk operations by providing application and desktop support to customers
    • Document policies and procedures as necessary
    • Support unit needs using campus resources such as telephony and email
    • Work within defined policies and procedures to solve user or system problems, including those that require solutions with originality and/or ingenuity
    • Identify problems to be solved, and escalates appropriately
  • Security
    • Implement system and data security best practices
  • Application Administration
    • Participate and support software development projects, from conception through testing, implementation, and documentation
  • Other Duties
    • Assume appropriate related additional duties to further the mission of the unit
    • Complete assigned individual projects with durations of 2-6 months
    • Complete most work with limited supervision, appropriately judging when to seek assistance or guidance from subject experts or management


  • Duties & Responsibilities for Infrastructure Specialist
  • Hardware and System Software
  • • Coordinate and administer hardware, software, and network technology operations of Student Affairs Units.
    • Plan and develop tools to provide automated workstation installation, maintenance and software installation with Windows Deployment Services, SCCM, or similar systems management software of Maintain critical administrative servers and applications, including file and print servers, MS SQL, Active Directory and Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Maintain specialized servers and applications, such as time & attendance, accounting, point-of-sale software, and web tool software.
  • • Plan and implement migration plans for major software version upgrades and replacing outdated technologies with new and current technologies.
    • Analyze functional and performance issues associated with use of technology, collaborate with peers on possible solutions and implement corrective actions in a timely manner.
    • Apply technology with minimum supervision and using considerable evaluation, originality, and/or ingenuity.
    • Independently complete assigned projects with durations of six months or longer.
  • Support
    • Engage with multiple units, actively learning their business processes and seeking out ways to support and improve them.
    • Know assigned mental health systems environment and associated user base consisting of Mental Health Counselors, and other healthcare support staff and maintains and builds user and product manager relationships, while keeping assigned user community well informed of technical issues and changes.
    • Consult with clients (both internal and external) about hardware and software functions or uses; develop specialized technical solutions, provide application and desktop support to end-users.
    • Maintain and share current knowledge of industry advances and trends. Act as a technical and institutional resource for other Student Affairs Technology staff, providing training and advice as needed.
    • Work collaboratively with senior staff members from Student Affairs Units to develop and maintain efficient technology for the organization.
  • Security
    • Implement system and data security best practices
    • Provide guidance and support for HIPAA compliance, State and Federal laws related to mental health care data privacy, PCI compliance, FERPA compliance, IlliniSecure Standards, and other standard security practices.
  • Other Duties
    • Assist and contribute to development of solutions that serve the strategic needs of Student Affairs Units.
    • Perform other duties as assigned to further the mission of the unit.
    • Complete work with minimal supervision and demonstrate solid judgment on when and from whom to seek assistance and approval
  • Additional Physical Demands
    •The majority of work will be within an office work environment, however visits to other campus locations can be expected
    •Installation of server and workstation hardware involves frequent lifting and moving equipment, media, and peripherals approximating 35-40 pounds. The individual must be able to access all areas of the building
    •May require emergency response or maintenance work outside of normal working hours
    The position is eligible for in-person and/or hybrid work

    Qualifications for the Infrastructure Specialist

    Minimum Qualifications
    Five years of progressively more responsible work experience in an IT-related profession***, including:
    • Demonstrated experience providing application and desktop support to end-users
    • Demonstrated experience troubleshooting Windows workstation operating systems, applications and hardware
    • Demonstrated experience in the use of Microsoft Active Directory, including group and object management, policy tasks, access control and authorization
    • Demonstrated experience using tools and resources to optimize the delivery of technology services to the end user, such as with endpoint management, imaging, or centralized solutions
    • Experience maintaining security best practices
    • Experience supporting essential network services (DNS, DHCP, and/or VPNs) and diagnosing network problems
    • Experience troubleshooting Windows server operating systems, applications and hardware
    • Experience with storage and backup systems.
    ***60 semester hours or Associate's degree in Information Technology (IT), IT Management, or a closely related discipline can substitute for one year of experience
    ***90-120 semester hours or Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology (IT), IT Management, or a closely related discipline can substitute for two years of experience

    Preferred Qualifications
    Experience with Apple OS and iOS in an enterprise environment •Experience with Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP (LAMP) servers and services •Experience with
    digital signage and/or CCTV systems •Experience administering MS SQL Server and IIS webservers •Experience with database design and optimization •Experience with
    server, desktop or application virtualization and SAN infrastructure •Experience supporting mobile technology platforms (Examples: tablets, iPads,
    smartphones)•Experience supporting enterprise Exchange and Outlook •Experience supporting Skype for Business •Experience in a higher education environment
    Equivalent Microsoft certification to MCSE

  • Qualifications for the Senior Infrastructure Specialist

    Minimum Qualifications
    Eight years of progressively more responsible work experience in an IT-related profession***, including:
    • Demonstrated experience troubleshooting Windows workstation operating systems, applications and hardware
    • Demonstrated experience administering Database Servers and Web Servers.
    • Demonstrated experience using tools and resources to optimize the delivery of technology services to the end user, such as with endpoint management, imaging, or centralized solutions.
    • Demonstrated experience in the application of technology security concepts in an enterprise environment.
    • Production server and virtual machine administration experience.
    • Proficiency with Windows, Macintosh, or Linux server network and desktop operating systems on TCP/IP networks.
    • Demonstrated experience supporting multiple projects/areas/units simultaneously.
    • Experience providing technical leadership and design guidance on IT projects and guiding other technical staff in achieving project completion.
    ***60 semester hours or Associate's degree in Information Technology (IT), IT Management, or a closely related discipline can substitute for one year of experience
    ***90-120 semester hours or Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology (IT), IT Management, or a closely related discipline can substitute for two years of experience

    Preferred Qualifications
    Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Business or other related fields.
    • Similar work experience in an academic or campus environment.
    • Demonstrated experience administering Microsoft SQL Server and IIS webservers, including managing security, performance monitoring/optimization, and server configuration.
    • Experience with storage and back-ups.
    • Experience in providing IT support to Student Affairs professionals or other organizations providing support to students in higher education.
    • Experience with Linux server operating systems. Experience with desktop and hand-held/mobile hardware and software.
    • Experience with time & attendance, accounting, point-of-sale systems, Microsoft Office Suite and web tool software.
    • Equivalent Microsoft Certification to MCSE

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    Excellent communications skills, ability to be flexible team-oriented work environment, and ease of working through many interruptions are essential. Ability to work with and support a wide variety of stakeholders. Ability to function with a high level of independence and to exercise independent judgment in scheduling and completion of work assigned. Knowledgeable about current technology trends. Must be organized, detail oriented and work well under pressure in order to meet multiple deadlines. Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality regarding sensitive information due to the nature of the information involved with transactions. Excellent understanding of relational databases and associated software.

    Appointment Information
    This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5031 - Information Technology Technical Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 11/29/2022. The salary range for the Infrastructure Specialist starts at $60,000. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
