Position Summary

The School of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences is located in the College of Health and Human Services. The school offers an undergraduate degree in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, an M.A. in Speech-Language Pathology, and in partnership with UCSD, a doctorate of Audiology (Au.D) and a Ph.D. in Language and Communicative Disorders. The School is extensively involved in local, state, and national human service issues through faculty research and community intervention programs.

The School of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, in addition to maintaining a professional program in the areas of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, maintains Audiology and Speech-Language Clinics that provide clinical services to the community as well as a facility for graduate students to receive their clinical training. Personnel in the Clinics include the Speech-Language Clinic Director, the Audiology Clinic Director, clinical faculty, clinic office support staff, and graduate assistants.

Under general supervision, this position provides technical support for the School in the maintenance and installation of a wide variety of computers, clinical research, and instructional equipment required in the operations and in the accomplishment of the mission of the School.

The Information Technician Consultant is the primary contact for all clinic, lab, and faculty/staff/student technical support, including troubleshooting, updating, and maintenance for computer hardware and software. Equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, technical support, and setup. Create tutorials for use of equipment, systems, and workflows. Computer hardware and software assistance/network support to academic and clinical faculty/staff/students

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits-eligible, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on-campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Candidate Qualifications

The ideal candidate for this position will have a solid foundation of IT skills, IT help desk experience, and a strong customer service orientation. The incumbent must be a motivated team player with a positive "can-do" attitude who thrives in a busy, fast-paced environment. Self-motivation and initiative are valuable traits for the candidate that is selected for this position. Core functions of the position include user consultation, staff, and faculty IT support, as well as maintenance and consultation for a wide variety of instructional equipment.

Education and Experience

To enter this classification, a basic foundation of knowledge and skills in technical information systems and application program packages is a prerequisite. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields, or similar certified coursework in applicable fields of study. Foundation knowledge and skills for the Information Technology Consultant, depending on the nature of the position assignment, may include working knowledge of common software application packages, equipment platforms, reference database systems and sources, and training methods and a basic understanding of networks, data communication, and multimedia systems.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience in an academic environment or other large organization.

  • Minimum of one year of professional experience supporting standard desktop and web software. (e.g. MS Office products, Google applications, Mail applications, Adobe Products)

  • Minimum of one year of professional experience setting up and repairing computer hardware and peripherals.

  • Experience and demonstrated ability to deliver training and consultation to users.

  • Experience in the use of audio-visual equipment.

Specialized Skills

Knowledge of information technology systems and/or applications, including:

  • General knowledge of methods, materials, and tools used in the repair and maintenance of computers and instructional equipment.

  • Ability to analyze and diagnose equipment problems to determine necessary repairs.

  • Minimum of one year of experience in maintenance, repair, and operation of computers and electronic equipment, and/or two years of relevant trade school or technical training.

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

Licenses and/or Certifications Required:

Valid California Driver's License required within 10 days of hire.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources. Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $3,700 per month.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,470 - $6,681 per month.

SDSU COVID-19 Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. An individual is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose of a two-shot vaccine or two weeks after the first dose of a single-shot vaccine.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
