Position Summary

The Harkins Intern for the Duke Centennial will process archival collections anticipated to be in high demand during the Duke Centennial (2024). The Harkins Intern will also assist the Assistant University Archivist with outreach to students and student groups, along with other projects to prepare for Duke's upcoming centennial.

Responsibilities
  • Assists with collection appraisal, rehousing, processing, and description of archival collections
  • Collaborates with Assistant University Archivist in student outreach and collecting
  • Assists staff in other work done in preparation for Duke's centennial
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications

Education:

Required: Applicants must have completed a bachelor's degree and must currently be enrolled in or a graduate from an accredited advanced degree program.

Preferred: Current enrollment in a related graduate program combined with archival experience or training.

Experience:

Required:None required.

Preferred:Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; strong project and time-management skills; interest in institutional archives; demonstrated experience with collaborative projects; excellent organizational skills; demonstrated commitment to providing outstanding customer services; prior experience working in a special collections setting and/or completion of at least one course in archival theory; comparable work experience in an archival setting; prior experience with Archives Space; academic background in American history.Working Conditions
  • Frequently moves library materials weighing up to 40 pounds

  • Must be able to work in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible

Hiring Rate

$18.00 per hour. The position is not eligible for University fringe benefits or moving, housing, or relocation expenses.

Hours

This internship is a temporary, part-time position available for up to 19 hours per week. Hours are flexible within a M-F, 8:30-5:00 work week, but interns are expected to set and maintain a consistent schedule. The Digital Collections Intern will be working onsite at Duke University Libraries. Must work from inside North Carolina.
