The Daniel Felix Ritchie School of Engineering and Computer Science (RSECS) at the University of Denver invites applications for a Grants Administrator position. RSECS is creating the future of technology by providing computer science and engineering students with an education emphasizing ethics and cross-disciplinary knowledge, along with research programs that address deep societal needs. RSECS is home to three departments: Computer Science, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Mechanical & Materials Engineering. In Fall 2016, RSECS moved into a new building that houses state-of-the-art research and instructional laboratories as well as a modern innovation and maker-space floor.

Position Summary

The Grants Administrator will be primarily responsible for developing and assisting in writing grant proposals to foundations, governmental agencies, and other grant-awarding organizations. Duties will include assisting RSECS principal investigators (PIs) in submitting proposals including identifying opportunities, preparing budgets, serving as the primary interface with the University of Denver Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, interpreting program guidelines, communicating with sponsors, negotiating awards, tracking expenditures, invoicing, certifying effort, and generating financial reports. The Grants Administrator will also conduct prospect research and maintain a calendar of submissions and success rates for RSECS PIs.

Essential Functions

Proposal Preparation

  • Seek out and communicate research funding opportunities to RSECS investigators.
  • Work with PIs to develop budgets, assuring that all potential costs have been identified and justified, including salaries, fringe benefits, indirect costs, cost-share, etc.
  • Work collaboratively with PIs in writing and editing of proposal aims and research strategy.
  • Prepare and submit all necessary sponsor forms as required by regulations, university policy, and sponsors.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the PIs and the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.
  • Negotiate terms and conditions of grants, contracts and subcontracts with sponsors and subcontractors to assure compliance with federal regulations and university policies and procedures.
  • Prepare agreements, obtaining departmental approvals for institutional signatures.
  • Establish and maintain contact with program officers and foundation officials.
  • Maintain a history of funding data and submitted grant applications from RSECS research.
  • Assist RSECS students to assemble training grants.
Post-Award Administration
  • Monitor milestones and deliverables and work with faculty and staff to satisfy sponsor requirements.
  • Work with ORSP staff to assure that award is managed in compliance with all regulations, policies, and requirements and close out funds in accordance with these regulations, policies, and requirements.
  • Perform common post-award functions that include: Budget Management, Expenditure Approvals, Billing and Accounts Receivable, Effort Certifications, Grant Payroll, Financial Reports, and Award Closeouts.

  • Ability to review and analyze grant expenditure budgets.
  • Knowledge and practical application of accounting principles and federal/state regulations.
  • Ability to comprehend contractual documents.
  • Understanding of pre and/or post-award grant/contract administration, including the accounting for federal grants or contracts.
Required Qualifications
  • A four-year degree
  • Experience in grant writing and administration. Candidates must be excellent writers, with a strong command of the English language. Candidates must be able to multi-task, work well under pressure with deadlines, be comfortable with coordination of groups of researchers, and have a solid understanding of grant budgets and forms.
  • 2-3 years of work experience in grant/contract administration and/or accounting and finance.
  • Experience using electronic payment systems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degrees aligned with RSECS research areas are preferred.
Working Environment
  • Standard office environment.
  • Unexpected interruptions occur often, and stress level is moderate to high.
  • Noise level is quiet to moderate.

  • Physical Activities
  • Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period.
  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

  • Work Schedule

    Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule.

    Salary Grade Number

    The salary grade for the position is 10.

    Salary Range

    The salary range for this position is $60,000-$70,000.

    The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate's sex or any other protected status.
