Summary

Under minimal supervision, the GL Accountant operates within the Finance Department as it pertains to accounting, budgeting and reporting functions.

Essential Competencies, Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the preparation, distribution, and maintenance of the monthly standard company project reports. Design and produce reports regarding current projects with accompanying budget and management information. Whenever possible utilize the capabilities of the Deltek Accounting/Job Cost software in the preparation of reports.
  • Produce special reports for executives on hours and operating performance as requested.
  • Prepare, maintain, and review monthly balance sheet schedules for two companies.
  • Assist the department in the performance of the normal monthly, quarterly, and annual audit preparation duties at the direction of the Director of Finance.
  • Prepare monthly billings and invoices. Review Accounts Receivable reports to ensure timely payments are being received. Alert appropriate Managers if timely payments are not received.
  • Proper tracking of contracts as well as creating contract briefs and purchase orders for subcontractor agreements
  • Prepare monthly project financials for distribution to Project Managers and Executive Management. Responsible for recognizing trends and reporting abnormalities to Accounting Manager/Director
  • Daily bank reconciliations and cash flow projections
  • Review Accounts Payable for accuracy and consistency.
  • Responsible for knowing company travel policy and ensuring that the policy is enforced when reviewing expense reports and the general ledger.
  • Ability to assist in the revenue process and accurately be able to tie back invoicing to revenue amounts as well as understanding topic 606
  • Determine and recommend improvements and/or upgrades in current accounting software or department utilization of existing software.
  • Analyze project financial information and make recommendations.
  • Maintain Small Business reporting requirements for multiple contracts. Prepare required reporting backup to be provided to different entities on a monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annual basis as required by each contract.
  • Prepare monthly indirect rates. Review General Ledger for accuracy to insure all necessary accounts are included in leave, benefit fringe, overhead, and general & administrative rates. Assist Accounting Manager/Director with year-end projections and analysis.
  • Set up new projects in Cost Point accounting software, including billing schedule if available.
  • Project deadlines may necessitate occasional extended work hours.
    Job Requirements:

    Education and/or Experience

    • BS in accounting field.
    • 3 - 5 years' experience in government contracting/cost accounting, budgeting, or financial area.

      Other Qualifications

      • Very strong Microsoft Excel skills required, including data manipulation, graphics, formatting, filters, macros and pivot tables.
      • Strong knowledge of computerized accounting/project costing systems, including desktop PCs. Knowledge of project cost accounting, GAAP, and Federal Procurement laws helpful.
      • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
