Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 327-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus as well as at 10 Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

Job Role Summary

The Family Planning Health Care Technician II is essential to the efficiency of clinic flow and patient access to the Eskenazi Health Family Planning Program. This position provides far reaching support of the program by performing routine rooming functions for exams and procedures, collecting and documenting patient history as permitted, performing POC testing, providing patient centered education and counseling according to Eskenazi Health and Title X Program requirements, providing routine contraceptive injections according to protocol, and performing front office patient service assistant duties as needed.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

BACK OFFICE

  • Practice is in compliance with Eskenazi's safety standards; adheres to state and federal safety guidelines; cleans rooms after each patient exam/procedure per protocol
  • Demonstrates good communication skills using appropriate medical terminology; answers phones/makes phone calls as needed/directed; coordinates outside referrals for the provider per written order; communicates with front office staff and providers regarding wait times
  • Alters activities/behaviors to ensure adequate care appropriate to the age of patients served (pediatric, adult, geriatric)
  • Accurately measures and records vital signs, heights, weights, BMI, pain and other parameters as required; interviews patient and accurately records history, chief complain and other pertinent findings; assists provider with exams and minor office procedures
  • Prepares patients for examinations and performs routine screening/POC tests including: correctly performs related quality control testing and documents results
  • Collects (including phlebotomy) and competently processes lab specimens; demonstrates competence/accountability in the provision of treatments/tests/phlebotomy/injections
  • Accurately, legibly and legally documents findings, services provided, education/instructions given; completes other required documentation as needed (CVR)

FRONT OFFICE

  • Performs front desk receptionist/greeter functions; verifies patient information per policy; obtains patient consent for treatment and provides notice of privacy practice; monitors front office area to ensure patients/visitors are appropriately served
  • Performs a variety of clerical and patient service duties necessary to maintain efficient flow of operations in the medical office; prepares patient chart for visit as needed; operates standard office equipment
  • Updates demographic and insurance information; accurately completes registration forms and processes; appropriately attaches insurance information
  • Educates patient about and collects copay, coinsurance or self-pay obligation; balances and reconciles all money collected daily
  • Maintains and updates appointment status daily; processes "no show" information; communicates with back office staff and providers regarding wait times; manages appointment line phone calls and appointment scheduling as determined by program needs

GENERAL

  • Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of Title X Medical Standards, policies and procedures; assists with the orientation of new staff members as requested/directed; performs community outreach as needed/directed to promote the program
  • Provides exceptional customer service as evidenced by demonstration of AIDET principals; exhibits legal and ethical professional conduct, follows organizational/site/program protocols/processes
  • Helps maintain clinic flow and efficiency; maintains supplies and equipment for front and back office (stocking/ordering) including routine stocking of exam rooms
  • Functions effectively as a team member and responds to change in a constructive manner; utilizes sound judgment to recognize level of urgency and responds appropriately; sees problems through to conclusion even in stressful patient interactions
  • Works efficiently and effectively during down times to keep work flowing; adjusts own workload to support co-workers in meeting patient/program/clinic needs

HEALTH CARE TECH II SPECIFIC

  • Prepares and competently administers medications (contraceptive injection, vaccines, and unit-dosed nebulizer only) with provider written order
  • Offers suggestions to improve department efficiencies; anticipates provider needs

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • CPR certification (may be acquired during orientation)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrates basic knowledge of Patient Centered Medical Home, FQHC vs Non-FQHC, Quality Program, Cycle Times, Title X Performance Metrics and Unduplicated Patient numbers
  • Basic computer and mathematic skills
  • Exhibits hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity when working with patients and or equipment
  • Ability to assess age specific and population specific needs of patients to perform various standard lab and medical procedures
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology, ICD-10 coding, health insurance processes
  • Ability to recognize emergent situations and act appropriately
  • Understand and carry out written orders
  • Ability to stand/walk for extensive periods of time
  • Appropriately interacts with patients from all economic, educational, social, cultural, ethnic backgrounds
  • Potential exposure to dangerous or infectious materials and situations
  • Working knowledge of multiple insurance plans and networks
  • Ability to demonstrate alpha/numeric filing skills
  • Ability to demonstrate effective oral/written communication skills, including the ability to communicate with patients in a manner appropriate to the patient's age and developmental stage
  • Ability to multi-task and work effectively under pressure of high patient volume
  • Ability to pass exams related to and use multiple computer system applications
  • Ability to demonstrate flexibility to changing work duties, priorities, clinic locations and clinic hours depending on program needs
  • Ability to demonstrate effective, courteous and tactful communication with public and co-workers
  • Ability to accurately count money and give change
