Job Description

Failure Analysis Engineer will be responsible for evaluatingthe electrical and mechanical characteristics of systems and/or integrated circuits, components, sub-components and systems to determine the cause of failure, including the verification of analog and digital performance. Analyzingfailure reports and recommends corrective action. Developingmethods, processes, procedures, and equipment that will improve the failure analysis process and/or reduce failures. Be the source for technical information, guidance and leadership.

Examples of the type of investigations:

  • Identifieda semiconductor fabrication defect as well as a design related issue within a non-functioning, first version product to be used in a novel medical application: With this failure insight, the client was able to quickly implement appropriate changes and corrections to the manufacturing and redesign, producing a working product to further their new product launch activities.
  • Isolatedand identifiedthe exact root cause of a product failure in the field, to a manufacturing event produced uniquely by a particular production step: With this information, the client was able to initiate a strategic containment plan to recall/quarantine the affected lot to avert catastrophic failures before they occurred. This helped prevent a larger public incident that could have damaged their product reliability and brand reputation.
Essential Job Functions:
  • Provide technical direction and leadership over all members of the department
  • Perform hands-on analytical work on electronic components
  • Oversees and directs aspects of departmental operations
  • Ability to identify and delegate work suitable for employees' capability
  • Organize, schedule prioritize, and assign jobs to group members
  • Review and approval analysis data and reports
  • Prepare customer summary reports
  • Provide, maintain, and emphasize quality in operation and product
  • Organize, manage, coordinate members of department to facilitate workflow
  • Assume project management role for technical projects
  • Organize and administer training and mentoring for staff
  • Promote and direct a cohesive team environment
  • Interface with external customers to maintain professional relationship
  • Identify and resolve problems within group operations
  • Develop and deliver technical content for operations, sale/marketing and other business development needs. Become the thought leader for the organization
  • Participate in industry conferences, seminars, tutorials and become source for technical information

Qualifications

Use of information in this role is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). All accepted applicants must be U.S. Persons as defined by ITAR: U.S. Person is a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e., "Green Card Holder"), Political Asylee, or Refugee.

Education and Experience:
  • BS in Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or other technical and science fields highly desired.
  • 5+ years of direct experience in Semiconductor or Electronics Failure Analysis.
  • 3+years of managing, leading or mentoring/training staff is highly recommended.
Hands-on Experience and Expertise:
  • Fault isolation techniques: OBIRCH, XVIA, EMMI, IR Thermography
  • Electrical Test/Measurements: ATE datalog, Curve trace, Bench test (parametric analyzer, o-scopes, CV measurement, etc.).
  • X-ray (2D and CT/3D).
  • Scanning Acoustic Microscopy (C-SAM).
  • Deprocessing (RIE, parallel lapping, etc.).
  • Chemical etching (HF, acids/bases, delineation, etc.).
  • Plasma etching (RIE, ICP, CF4, etc.).
  • Cross sectioning (metallurgical, ion mill, DB FIB, etc.).
  • SEM/EDS.
  • Microprobing/Picoprobing.
  • DPA (Destructive Physical Analysis)
  • Dye and Pry
  • Software: GDS layout, LabView.
What will set you apart?:
  • Fault isolation techniques: dynamic laser stimulation: SDL/LADA, Laser voltage probing (LVP)/laser timing probing (LTP)
  • Electrical Test/Measurements: ATE testing, Network Analyzer, Nanaprobing
  • Mechanical and Plasma FIB delayer for finFET and advanced process node
Job Knowledge, Skills, and Ability:
  • Knowledge in Device physics, circuits/schematics, IC design, semiconductor fabrication and package manufacturing, etc.
  • Industry Standards: ISO, MIL-STD, AEC, JEDEC, IPC, etc.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Must be a proficient communicator and listener.
  • Must be hands-on in a laboratory environment, operating tools, performing techniques, etc.

Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 80% of the time.
  • Ability to continuously operate a personal computer or lab equipment for extended periods of time (4 or more hours).
  • Ability to operate a keyboard and other lab equipment, use a telephone, access file cabinets and other items stored at various levels, including overhead
  • Ability to communicate clearly and understandably ensure an accurate exchange of information in normal conversational distance, over the telephone, and in a group setting.
  • Ability to handle small and fragile devices with tweezers and /or fingers.
  • Require close distance visual acuity with or without correction (Glasses, Contacts, etc.)
  • Must be willing and able to wear PPE such as hard-hat, steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, laboratory coat and/or any other devices or equipment that is required.
  • Learn new tasks, remember processes, maintain focus, complete tasks independently, make timely decisions in the context of a workflow, ability to communicate with visitors, ability to complete tasks in situations that have a speed or productivity quota.
  • Ability to move equipment or items up to 50 lbs with assistance.

Additional Information

Compensation Range: $100,000-$150,000 (Salary is commensurate with experience and degree of technical expertise.)
