Position Summary

The mission of the Office of Educational Opportunity Programs and Ethnic Affairs is to serve students from low-income backgrounds and historically underserved communities by providing innovative programs and services that facilitate the successful recruitment, retention and development of scholars and leaders as they persist toward a university degree.

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of EOP/Ethnic Affairs, the EOP Counselor is responsible for providing holistic counseling and academic advising for EOP students regarding course selection, evaluation, adjustment from high school and/or community college, financial aid referrals, personal counseling related to self-awareness, personal growth, peer relationships, family expectations/problems, career investigation, academic probation and residential life. In addition, Counselors also work with various retention initiatives to help students progress towards their degree in a timely manner. These are, but not limited to: probation/disqualification, not enrolled, high achievers, SAP, etc. The EOP Counselor also is responsible for the coordination of student service areas, events, and programs (e.g. EOP graduation, Summer Bridge, etc.).

This Counselor position will take the lead role in the coordination of all aspects of the EOP Summer Bridge 5-week residential program and the SOAR Mentor Program to include coordination of program activities and training and supervision of program staff, peer mentors, and graduate assistants.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits eligible, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.

Possession of this knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.

A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Preferred Qualifications

• The equivalent of five years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience or professional experience in higher education academic support services or equivalent.
• Master's degree in Counseling, College Student Development, Higher Education, or a directly related field.
• Experience developing, planning, and implementing workshops or other programming aimed at supporting students, including undocumented students and former foster youth.
• Experience working with diverse student populations.
• Knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which assigned.

Specialized Skills

• Minimum of one year of experience working with students from low income, traditionally underserved, and traditionally disadvantaged backgrounds.
• Minimum of one year of experience with student outreach efforts in school and community settings.
• Minimum of one year of experience developing, organizing, planning, and implementing university transitional programs.
• Minimum of one year of experience utilizing individual counseling techniques.
• Minimum of two years of experience analyzing complex situations accurately and adopting effective courses of action.
• Minimum of one year of experience advising students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources. The starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,691 per month.

Classification Salary Range: $4,691 - $6,683 per month.

SDSU COVID-19 Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. An individual is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose of a two-shot vaccine or two weeks after the first dose of a single-shot vaccine.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
