RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for locomotive compressed air component and subsystem design ownership including:

  • Developing compressed air component design specifications, validation plans and test procedures, conducting PPAP approvals, and owning direct interaction with vendors.
  • Developing compressed air subsystem designs, system and piping architecture, system mechanical packaging, executing system analysis and simulation, developing and executing validation test procedures, and supporting builds in the shop with rapid response to factory issues.
  • Providing subsystem leadership and interaction with interfacing subsystems to develop locomotive level designs, integrated with platform, truck, cabs, air brake, engine cooling, and electrical integration.
  • Providing design inputs for compressed air subsystem control definition.
  • Responsible for leading customer facing teams focused on product performance and reliability, tracking performance through various fault reporting and material usage data bases, and development of optimal maintenance intervals and procedures.
  • Responsible for reporting out to customers and internal levels of management on large scale programs and product developments.
  • Responsible to lead large scale requisition work, coordinating deliverables and close coordination with fellow team members to deliver both team wide and program specific deliverables.
  • Responsible for design review execution, presentation of technical data to internal and external customers, providing design direction to drafting, and leading drawing review and release.
  • Responsible for team metric tracking and management.
  • Prepare invention disclosures to protect the technology that provides a competitive advantage to the business.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering
  • 10+ years demonstrated experience in the field of mechanical engineering including exposure to and aptitude toward structural design, compressed air delivery management, air thermal management, thermal dynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer.
  • Ability to travel 10% of the time.
  • Ability to work in and around large pieces of ground transportation equipment, heavy industrial manufacturing setting, and heavy industrial laboratory environment. Must be able to set up instrumentation and test apparatus and conduct validation testing on locomotives and in a heavy industrial setting.
  • Ability to conduct compressed air analysis utilizing tools such as AMESim.
  • Ability to perform reliability analysis, including Weibull reliability curves.
  • Strong oral and written skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Ability to execute structural design evaluation of component and equipment installations, ability to execute structural FEA, and evaluate and interpret results to develop designs that meet strength and modal requirements.
DESIRED:
  • MS Mechanical Engineering degree.
  • Proficient in Unigraphics, ANSYS, CFD fluid and thermal analysis skills, Matlab software tools
  • Familiar with sheet metal fabrication and structural analysis of large mechanical packages
  • Knowledge of light fabrication manufacturing processes
  • Demonstrated knowledge of statistical analysis or Six Sigma certified.
  • Experience in mechanical packaging and thermal management of electronics.
  • Experience with reciprocating and screw compressors, air filtration and air dryer technologies, ASME pressure vessel codes, aftercooler and heat exchanger design.
