Job Summary

Bechtel Plant Machinery, Inc. (BPMI) is seeking Engineering students with an interest or degree path of study in structural mechanics for a paid, full-time (40 hours per week), extended co-op or internship in our Monroeville, PA office. If you are a current college Sophomore studying Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Science and Mechanics or Aerospace Engineering Discipline with an interest in or degree path of study in structural mechanics, our co-op/internship program will give you the opportunity to work in your field of study while simultaneously pursuing your bachelor's degree at an accredited college or university. These opportunities can enhance your academic training while teaching critical business skills and allowing you to learn about BPMI, the Navy, and the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.

We offer several options, although deviations will be considered (at least one working semester over the summer is required to participate in the training and shipyard tour detailed below):

  • Spring/Fall Semesters: August - December 2024, May- August 2025, Jan - May 2026
  • Summer Semesters: May - August 2024, May - August 2025

Structural Analyst Co-op/Intern responsibilities requiring technical evaluation of nuclear plant components (pressure vessels, valves, pumps, heat exchangers, and reactor servicing equipment). Functions encompass the following:
  • Review and approval of the structural adequacy of design submittals, evaluation of the technical impact resulting from deviations to contract requirements, determination of component acceptability for the expected lifetime of operation.
  • Supporting the internal BPMI customers and the equipment engineers, through extensive communication including documenting analysis work in technical reports.

  • Training - You will be provided with learning opportunities as a structural analysis co-op/intern such as training and experience with conducting finite element analyses, learning and applying knowledge of the structural design basis used in the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, and obtaining an understanding of a variety of different pieces of plant equipment. You will utilize hand calculations and finite element analysis software to evaluate structural acceptability of equipment and work with other structural analysts and equipment, materials, and inspection engineers to ensure critical program components and repair parts are procured and delivered to schedule.
  • Shipyard Tour - Our Internsand co-ops typicallyvisit Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia for a one-day shipyard tour. This unique and exciting opportunity allows you to see and potentially tour aircraft carriers, submarines, servicing facilities, and other areas of interest. You will gain a better appreciation of the important work BPMI does, and the key role the Navy plays in protecting the interests of the United States of America.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Enrolled in a Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Science and Mechanics or Aerospace engineering degree program with a minimum of one year completed by August 2023.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen due to government security clearance requirements. In order to work at BPMI, applicants must complete a federal background investigation and be granted a security clearance.

Preferred Job Requirements:
  • Basic understanding and working knowledge of engineering drawings.
  • Basic understanding and application of structural mechanics/mechanics of materials
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Abaqus or ANSYS knowledge desirable
  • Should possess strong oral and writing skills.
