SUMMARY:

The Electrician II is a skilled, licensed trade person responsible for evaluating, repairing and replacing a variety of electrical facility components, to ensure the equipment is fully operational and meets university standards in order to maintain a safe and operational environment. This position will be involved in corrective and preventive maintenance and minor alteration work and may oversee temporary labor and/or other trades persons or contractors as required. Responsibilities include working from schematics, drawings, layouts, or other specifications to locate and diagnose trouble in the electrical system; utilization of tools, testing and diagnostic equipment, and simple machine tools; and maintenance of tools and machinery.

RESPONSIBILITES:

Maintains mechanical and electrical systems by repairing, troubleshooting, and performing preventive maintenance or installing new equipment to maximize the availability of equipment for service and minimize unscheduled downtime.

  • Systems to include:
    • Lighting and lighting controls (interior and exterior)
    • Power wiring (0-600 volts and 4160 volt systems)
    • Generator systems
    • Security and fire alarm systems
    • Variable Frequency Drives
    • Other department specific equipment (e.g. scoreboards, a/v)

Work with Projects group on small projects - wiring and lighting. Evaluate project locations affected by project, determine capacity of electrical systems, provide temporary power, and secure fire alarms for construction

Assists in special events as required to ensure successful outcome, such as: setting up temporary power sources for special events and adapting techniques, tools, materials and/or equipment to meet special needs.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
  • The position requires the employee to work both in the office and on construction job sites where the environment will be dirty, noisy and subject to extreme heat and cold. Physical effort will range from sitting at a desk typing to climbing ladders, stooping or crawling under equipment and lifting up to 25 pounds.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code.
  • Ability to read and understand schematic diagrams.
  • Possess basic estimating skills to accurately assess labor and material costs for projects.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations pertaining to work performed.
  • Ability to use National Electrical Code and perform work in accordance with NEC.
  • Ability to use tools, meters and equipment correctly and safely.
  • Exercise behavior in accordance with University and Facilities guidelines, policies, procedures, mission and shared values.
  • Display professional manner and appearance at all times.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair problems.
  • Ability to plan and carry out project or maintenance work with minimal supervision.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally to all necessary key interfaces information pertaining to quality completion of work.
  • Physically capable of working as an electrician including work from ladders and high platforms or lifts.
  • Required: Must have a valid Driver's License and be able to produce a driving record with a minimum of 3 years of driving history in good standing

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Technical training in electricity evidenced by obtaining Journeyman's Electrician License (typically 3 years' Technical Trade School).
  • Minimum 4 years' progressive electrical experience evidenced by obtaining Journeyman's Electrician License.

WORK HOURS:
  • Full-time, non-exempt position
  • Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.; 8 hrs./day; 40 hrs./week
  • All Facilities employees are designated as essential personnel and are subject to work outside the normal work schedule on an emergency basis and are also subject to planned overtime work as required by the immediate supervisor.

SALARY STRUCTURE:
Pay Grade 5 (Hiring Range $18.24 to $24.17 per hour)
