Project Background:

The Advancing Capacity for the Environment (ACE) program will support USAID's work in the areas of climate change, environment, energy, and infrastructure work. The ACE program will primarily focus on providing support and services to DAI's client - the Center for Environment, Energy, and Infrastructure (EEI) within the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)'s Bureau for Development, Democracy, and Innovation (DDI). The program objective is to enhance USAID's effectiveness, leading to positive and sustainable development outcomes globally in the above sectors through activities under four key tasks areas: communications, training, knowledge management, and facilitation/organizational development. The program will provide these comprehensive services and support across EEI as a collective Center, but also dedicated services and support to each of its three Branches-Climate & Cross-Sectoral Strategy (CCS), Natural Environment (NE), and Built Environment (BE)-including services and support to each of the separate Divisions within each Branch.

Position Description:

The Editorial Manager will be responsible for reviewing written content developed by USAID staff, the ACE Team, and other USAID partners (ACE's clients). The Editorial Manager will use their attention to detail and their expert knowledge of style guides to contribute to well-written and error-free content. The Editorial Manager will work with these partners in an advisory and coordination capacity to support the development of a steady flow of timely and high-quality content aligned with priority audiences, themes, and USAID's Style Guide, Message Manual, and branding. The Editorial Manager may also be responsible for generating ideas for stories, blogs, and/or articles. The Editorial Manager will be supervised by the Communications Director.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide copy-editing services including correction of grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors, fact-checking, and providing suggestions on how to improve clarity of writing to ACE clients in a timely, client-oriented, and efficient manner.
  • Check content against USAID style guide, branding and marking guide to ensure compliance and style conformity.
  • Arrange page layouts for printed and online publications to include written content as well as elements for photos, graphics, tables, and/or charts for communication and outreach content.
  • Meet with ACE Team, USAID, and other partners to define content needs, provide inputs into the ACE editorial calendar.
  • Provide capacity building to USAID, ACE, and partner staff regarding the content creation/editing and overall production process.
  • May generate ideas for stories, blogs, and/or articles depending on experience and skills by being flexible and able to learn about subject matter content.
  • Provide 508 compliance copy-editing for documents to be ready for uploading into USAID's Development Experience Clearinghouse (DEC) as needed.

Qualifications:
  • B . A . /B . S . or higher in English, communications , journalism, or related disciplines . Experience working on environmental and infrastructure issues a plus.
  • 8+ years of experience as a copy editor.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills inclusive of grammar and copy-editing skills in English.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on multiple content initiatives and priorities at once in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in multi-tasking, handling work pressures, attention to detail, and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated experience ensuring communication and outreach products conform to USAID's style guide, branding and marking requirements, message manual, and US Government 508 compliance.
  • Experience working on MS Office, Adobe Creative, Google Suite software and applications
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including a track record of successful coordination and effective working relations with a wide range of stakeholders.
