ABOUT THE POSITION:

Under the general supervision of the University Diversity Officer, the Equity and Inclusion Center Coordinator works collaboratively within the university community to provide student learning, advising, engagement, and leadership opportunities outside of the classroom and in partnership with faculty inside the classroom through the development, planning, and implementation of diversity, cultural, social justice, and inclusion programs. The Coordinator will have experience and knowledge in identity-based student support with a focus in support for students of color. The incumbent has overall responsibility for the Office of Diversity student equity and inclusion programs, initiatives, standing university committees, budget, planning, marketing, publicity, and assessment of all center program's effectiveness. Duties include actively developing, planning, leading, implementing and assessing all student DEI events, programs, initiatives and student engagement activities, in collaboration with internal and external university stakeholders. The incumbent leads assessment efforts, including program evaluation to assess the impact of center programming on raising awareness, educating and fostering a welcoming and inclusive campus environment. The Coordinator provides lead work direction to staff that work in the DISC, as well as leads university-wide committees, and provides training/facilitation to collaborators in Student Affairs and Academic Affairs. The incumbent shall function as a diversity professional with requisite diversity, equity and inclusion training and provides leadership and guidance to those identity-based and cultural student clubs and organizations recognized by the university.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Student Leadership Development & Support Services

  • Designs, implements and facilitates student leadership training specific to equity, inclusion and justice in collaboration with university stakeholders (e.g. Academic Affairs and Student Affairs).
  • Assesses student equity, inclusion, justice leadership and support services initiatives annually using quantitative and qualitative measures.
  • Design and implement student support services programming for identity-based student groups that utilize the center.
  • Partners and collaborates with appropriate university stakeholders to facilitate workshops specific to student issues related to equity, inclusion and justice.
  • Works with identity-based student leadership to facilitate growth and development, build leadership skills in the area of diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Provides educational awareness and training opportunities pertaining to diversity, equity and inclusion for university student leaders.
  • Designs, implements and facilitates specialized workshop sessions regarding diversity, equity and inclusion in partnership with Academic Affairs and Student Affairs for incoming students that includes but is not limited to Freshman & Transfer Orientation and student leaders in various programs (e.g. Orientation, Housing & Residence Life, Associated Students, Inc., and Greek Life).
  • Provides guidance to student leaders regarding cultural clubs, workshops and learning programs.
  • Serves as the student-facing division of the University Office of Diversity.
  • Participates in relevant regional and national diversity center listservs, associations as a means to network with colleagues on other campuses in order to maintain best practice methods and anticipate emerging trends related to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Leads, creates and implements restorative justice initiatives for the DISC.
  • Leads and participates in k-18 initiatives, alumni and student engagement activities and collaborations as assigned by University Diversity Officer.

Programming and Development

  • Leads and provides oversight for the programmatic direction for student equity and inclusion, ensuring that programmatic efforts are grounded in Student Development theory.
  • Creates an annual strategic plan and assessment measures for the center
  • Serves as committee chair and convener for Heritage Months, identifies stakeholder participants across the university community that includes faculty, staff and students and leads the design, implementation of all Heritage Months activities.
  • Initiates and leads programming efforts that promote awareness, education and engagement within the campus community with an emphasis on students that promote equitable student success.
  • Determines yearly activities in partnership with university stakeholder's programmatic initiatives that align with national best practices for diverse student engagement and retention.
  • Leads quantitative and qualitative assessment, development, implementation, and evaluation of diversity, equity and inclusion programs for students and student staff.
  • Provide advising and leadership support to recognized identity-based and cultural student clubs and organizations, including guidance in the areas of event/program planning.
  • Leads and creates an academic year action plan for all diversity, equity and inclusion activities associated with student equity and inclusion programming, initiatives, advising, committee leadership, monitoring program budgets, documenting departmental programming activity, and serving as a programming resource. Conducts research and writing relevant to diversity, equity and inclusion specific to national best practices in diversity centers. Advises, develops, and makes recommendations to the Office of Diversity for educational programming opportunities that impact equitable student success.
  • Leads, and develops student programs and provides diversity, equity and inclusion training for students to create an environment that attracts and supports a diverse student population.
  • Develops and or partners with stakeholders to use and create various educational brochures, flyers, and programming materials.

Lead Work Direction

  • Recruit, hire, train, evaluate and provide lead work direction to center staff.
  • Maintain work-setting expectations for all center staff members. Establish and implement a training structure (weekly training meetings, etc.) designed to build interpersonal skills for graduate assistants, student assistants and student volunteers.
  • Provide counseling and advisement to all center staff members in the resolution of programmatic issues. Consult with the University Diversity Officer and the Office of Human Resources to address interpersonal issues with staff members, when appropriate.
  • Lead periodic planning meetings to ensure programs are finalized prior to the start of each quarter.

Budget Coordination

  • Oversees an annual budget of over $300,000 for annual operating expenses.
  • Responsible for oversight of the staffing budget and dissemination of funds.
  • Makes budgetary decisions for the center programs.
  • Forecasts annual center budget, maintain accountability and proper financial records.

Administration

  • Oversees and participates in day-to-day center operations.
  • Serves as a member University bias response and planning committee.
  • Leads and facilitates restorative justice initiatives for identity-based student groups or cultural clubs.
  • Provides listening space for restorative practice and dialogue space.
  • Communicates with supervisor regarding crisis situations, and partners with university stakeholders regarding developments affecting their functions.
  • Acts as mediator and intervenes with students when issues become escalated.
  • Reviews and updates center policy manuals.
  • Establishes goals, objectives, and strategic planning strategies for the department.
  • Serves as a member of the university committee that creates annual student diversity, equity and inclusion climate surveys. Partners with university stakeholders to analyze relevant center data.
  • Makes recommendations concerning all services provided by the department.

Liaison/Committee Work

  • Leads university-wide committees as assigned by the UDO.
  • Serves as the primary liaison between the DISC and Student Affairs Student Equity & Success Programs (SEAS). This role will be the bridge between programming and activities that occur at the DISC and SEAS students.
  • Creates collaborative and effective relationships with diversity, equity and inclusion university stakeholders.
  • Serves on University committees as appointed by the UDO including but not limited to the University Diversity Advisory Council, University Diversity Advisory Council subcommittees, Sustainability Committee.
  • Serves as the coordinator for the university staff/faculty affinity and employee resource groups.
  • Participates on departmental task forces and committees as designated.

Other Duties and Support Functions

  • Advises and counsels students on social, personal, cultural, academic and disciplinary issues.
  • Intervenes and interfaces with students and parents when issues become escalated.
  • Assists in documenting functional area policies and procedures and trains department staff in their implementation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience of the principles, practices and trends in the field of equity, inclusion and justice in higher education administration.
  • Experience in student affairs, multicultural affairs, diversity, social justice, inclusion, and/or a related field.
  • Experience and ability to work with a diverse student and campus population.
  • Knowledge of individual and group dynamics to be used when advising clients.
  • Excellent interpersonal awareness and emotional intelligence.
  • Experience in restorative practices, dialogue, or mediation.
  • Excellent adult learner facilitation skills.
  • Excellent delegation skills and the ability to provide lead work direction, train and evaluate student staff and volunteers.
  • Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, and through the use of various technologies including web.
  • Ability to lead across all levels of hierarchy.
  • Experience with k-18 pipeline initiatives.
  • Ability to establish a cooperative working relationship with faculty, students, student organizations, campus departments, and the public.
  • Ability to work independently and represent the University Diversity Officer at designated internal and external university functions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge and Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned or the ability to quickly acquire such knowledge. General knowledge of the policies, practices and activities of Student Services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned; general knowledge of the principles, problems and methods of public administration, including organizational, personnel and fiscal management; general knowledge of advanced statistical and research methods.

Ability to carry out very complex assignments without detailed instructions; advise students individually or in groups on varied and complex matters; determine the appropriate course of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals and groups in personal interactions of a sensitive nature; reason logically and analyze and solve organizational and operating problems of one or several program areas; plan, coordinate and initiate actions necessary to implement administrative or group decisions or recommendations; analyze and define complex organizational, policy or procedural problems, collect and evaluate data, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; understand the roles and responsibilities of others and to gauge relationships accordingly by taking into account the variety of the interrelationships, motivations and goals of the members of the organization served; and establish and maintain effective, cooperative and harmonious working relationships in circumstances which involve the denial of requests or the necessity to persuade others to accept a different point of view.

Experience:

Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent to four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems.

A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job‑related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling.

Education:

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Progressively responsible work experience in student affairs, multicultural affairs, diversity, social justice, inclusion, and/or a related field.
  • Five years of experience in diversity programs, student life, and/or student services preferred.
  • Working knowledge of policies, procedures and practices to produce educationally and philosophically sound events and programs.
  • Training in restorative justice
  • Training in dialogue
  • Training in facilitation
  • Training in trauma-informed care
  • Working knowledge of student development theory and research.
