The salary range will be from $90,000 - $105,000 per year.

This position is a Management Personnel Plan (MPP) position in the CSU, and serves at the pleasure of the President.

The CSU enjoys a generous benefits program with employer paid life insurance ($100,000), as well as health, dental, and vision insurance with the monthly premium largely paid by the CSU. Cal State East Bay's beautiful main campus is located in the Hayward hills with panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay shoreline. Reporting directly to the Dean of Libraries, the Director assumes administrative responsibility for the Student Center for Academic Achievement (SCAA), which offers academic assistance and resources designed to promote student learning with an emphasis on peer instruction in writing, math, science, and statistics.

This position requires a strong educator committed to student success who has the vision, knowledge, and passion to lead a high-quality center for learning assistance. The Director works collaboratively with other programs on campus that offer academic support including Accessibility Services, Student Equity and Success Programs, Academic Advising & Career Education, Peer Academic Coaching, General Education, the Math and the STEM Labs, and the Library. The Director maintains strong contacts with academic departments and explores new opportunities for increasing student learning.

The Director oversees and coordinates the daily operations of SCAA, manages the budget, recruits, trains, and evaluates employees, assesses the effectiveness of current services using appropriate data analytic tools and implements procedures to improve them, develops new services consistent with campus priorities, coordinates operations with other campus services, and markets SCAA to the campus community. The Director stays current with research and trends in academic tutoring and supplemental education and explores opportunities for grant-funded initiatives.


Provide Leadership and Direction for the SCAA:

  • Manage staff members responsible for program coordination, including the Writing Tutor Coordinator, OWL and eTutoring Coordinator, and the Supplemental Instruction Coordinator.
  • Develop, implement, and assess learning outcomes and strategic plan consistent with campus goals.
  • Develop, assess, expand, and improve existing programs such as Peer Tutoring in Writing, Math, Statistics, and the Sciences; Supplemental Instruction (SI), the Online Writing Lab (OWL); eTutoring; Writing Associates (WA).
  • Create new programs that contribute to student success and retention.
  • Develop a SCAA marketing plan that advertises SCAA services both to students and faculty.
  • Work with other units on campus to implement campus-wide initiatives on student graduation, retention, and success.

Manage and Oversee Daily Operations:

  • With the Library Office Manager, develop, project, and manage the SCAA budget.
  • With the Library Office Manager, coordinate daily organization-wide operations.
  • Design and facilitate on-going tutor/SI training that aligns with College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) certification requirements.
  • In compliance with CSU, CSUEB, and University Library policies, create and codify policies, procedures, and processes that ensure equitable, fair, and effective use of all services.
  • Investigate student or employee complaints and provide supportive restorative solutions when possible.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and evaluate approximately 100 student employees each academic year.
  • Maintain statistics about SCAA services: usage, effectiveness of services as determined by student DFW rates and student feedback via surveys
  • Report on the effectiveness of SCAA's services through writing an Annual Report and writing regular reports to Academic Programs and Services (APS).
  • Manage and troubleshoot the Bay Advisor database and keep it integrated with campus systems.

Collaborate with Campus Stakeholders:

  • Maintain strong contacts with academic departments, Deans, Academic Programs and Services, Institutional Research, and CSU-wide colleagues.
  • Represent SCAA on campus committees.
  • Develop and maintain strong ties to student leaders.
  • Work effectively with Information Technology and Academic Technology Services.


  • Knowledge of learning theory and academic support services.
  • Expert knowledge in the theory and practice of tutoring, particularly concerning the pedagogy of writing with specific experience in training and developing student tutors.
  • Teaching experience in writing, math, or science.
  • Ability to supervise staff and students.
  • Ability to create, implement and assess effective learning programs/workshops that serve a variety of students and faculty.
  • Excellent listening skills (the ability to understand and respond to students and address their learning needs).
  • Ability to communicate effectively with faculty and address their concerns about student learning.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and maintain strong rapport with administrators, faculty, and staff.
  • Strong budget management skills.
  • Ability to develop assessment studies to measure impact of tutoring on GPA and retention.
  • Strong writing and presentation skills.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage and troubleshoot computer software and databases.
  • Ability to understand and meet the needs of a diverse student population.
  • Experience with English language learners.


  • Master's Degree in relevant field.
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in university teaching, training, supervision or program administration.


  • PhD in relevant field.
  • Knowledge of writing across the curriculum and/or math education.
  • Familiarity with technology and online tutoring.
  • Knowledge of and experience with student affairs issues, particularly retention.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Supplemental Instruction.


Satisfactory completion of a background check (including LiveScan, as appropriate), that may include, but is not limited to: criminal records check, verification of academic credentials, licenses, certificates, credit history, professional references and/or verification of work history is required for employment. Cal State East Bay will issue a conditional offer of employment to the selected candidate, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.
