About the Bard Sequence:

The Bard Sequence is an initiative of Bard College, one of the nation's leading institutions providing high quality education in the liberal arts and sciences to high school-aged students. Through partnerships between Bard and high schools/school systems across the country, the Bard Sequence enables young people enrolled in partner high schools to complete an inspiring college course of study concurrent with their high school studies, at no costs to students and families. Through the Bard Sequence, students develop college skills and confidence and can earn transferable, Bard College credits. The foundation of the Bard Sequence is a core curriculum comprised of four 3-credit, sequential courses centered on the history of ideas from antiquity to the present and focused on the skills of critical thinking, close reading of classical and challenging texts, and academic writing.

These college courses are offered to public high school students in an effort to address challenges of equity of access and success in higher education and to provide a meaningful bridge between high school and college, one in which a young person's first exposure to higher education is rigorous and intellectually inspiring while also providing them with the support they need to become confident, self-motivated college students. The Bard Sequence is based on the belief that all students benefit from a safe space in which they can learn to succeed in college by failing forward, taking risks in the classroom, and finding their voices as collegiate learners. The Bard Sequence is an initiative of the Bard Early College, Bard College's early college division, which serves approximately 3,000 students in five states and the District of Columbia and seeks to improve the transition from high school to college and increase access and success in higher education.

Currently, the Bard Sequence encompasses partnerships in four states and the District of Columbia serving around 280 students each semester. The Bard Sequence encompasses Bard's program with the New York Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES), with a home base in Hudson, New York, through which Bard courses are available to students in public high schools in Dutchess and Greene Counties (collectively BEC Hudson Valley).
