Occupational Summary The Director of Education and Public Programs leads the design and implementation of the museum's special events and education programs for the general public. This position oversees the museum's educational and public programs for K-12 students, family audiences, and adult visitors and manages the day-to-day work of the Education department and Special Events staff. Working collaboratively across the museum and with Duke and Durham partners, this position serves to meaningfully engage and cultivate new and long-term relationships with community groups and local audiences. The Director of Education and Public Programs plays a key role in further establishing the museum as a welcoming, diverse, and inclusive space for educational and civic engagement. This position supervises the full-time and part-time museum educators, special events staff as well as the part-time Gallery Guides. Reports to the Director.

Work Performed Leads the conceptualization, design, and implementation of the museum's full calendar of public programs in collaboration with the Curatorial, Development, Operations, Academic Initiatives and Marketing departments.
    Plans, organizes, and oversees the implementation of museum programs for all audiences (general public, university, K-12 students, teachers, and family audiences), including tours, performances, and other activities relating to the museum's collections and exhibitions.Aligns all programs with the goals and mission of the museum.Provides management oversight of the museum's special events operations and support; for Duke users and groups from the community, and the for Nasher exhibition openings and development events.Organizes and leads staff programming meetings.
Meaningfully engages and cultivates new and long-term relationships with community groups and local audiences.
    Researches and builds relationships with local leaders, teachers, and principals, and other community arts organizations.Maintains relationships with Duke's Office of Community Affairs and collaborates with OCA on community arts education projects as appropriate.Works with other University groups on events scheduling for the museum.Strategizes ways to diversify the museum's audience through outreach, public programs, and partnerships.With Director and department heads, develops a strategy and implements a plan for community engagement.Works with the Director to set appropriate targets for outside events in the museum.

Supervises and supports Education and Special Events department staff, including hiring, training, assigning/reviewing work, conducting performance evaluations, addressing work issues, and approving time.

    Creates and manages budget for education programs.In collaboration with the Deputy Director for Operations, establishes rates for events.Ensures necessary staff coverage for special events.Works collaboratively with management of the Nasher Café. Contributes to grants with Development department.Oversees the Nasher Teen Council and the Reflections Alzheimer's programOversees the Gallery Guide program of part-time community members and university students who give tours and engage with museum visitors.
Performs other related duties as required.

Desired Qualifications

At least 5 years of experience with developing public programs and community partnerships in the museum or arts sector. Knowledge of best practices and demonstrated track record with diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion efforts in museums or cultural institutions. Highly collaborative and communicative. Excellent project management and organizational skills. Ability to motivate others and manage projects independently and simultaneously. Knowledge of Durham and its many communities a plus.Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires communications, analytical and organization skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program. Masters degree in a related field preferred.

Experience

Position requires a minimum of 5 years related experience.
