POSITION OBJECTIVE

The director supports the efforts of Competitive Awards Research Development, a university-wide program to increase private support for research. This entails a primary responsibility for the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of a targeted group of individuals, local and national associations, and corporations and foundations for gifts of $100,000 and above. This position will require that approximately 80% of their time be on direct contact cultivation, proposal development, solicitation, and relationship management.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Close major gifts and grants from individual donors, associations, corporations, and foundations with an emphasis on gifts and grants of $100,000 and above. Develop and manage a portfolio of individual, association, corporation, and foundation major gift prospects with the responsibility for raising private support to the university. Meet with individual donors, and representatives of associations, corporations, and foundations. (25%)
  2. Support university-wide development programs and strategic initiatives. Identify gift and grant opportunities and develop strategic partnerships with the university's schools and colleges for the purpose of increasing private support for research. Support the senior vice president for research and technology management to increase private support for research university wide. (20%)
  3. Develop and implement program strategies and overall development plans. Identify possible conflicts in university-wide requests of targeted associations, corporations and foundations and act to resolve such conflicts. (20%)
  4. Identify, solicit, and steward assigned prospects and achieve personal fundraising goals. Work closely with alumni, volunteers, (including trustees), the president, and other senior administrators, to most effectively engage donors for assigned programs and initiatives. (15%)
  5. Serve as a resource for faculty in the planning and implementation of private support for research fundraising efforts, including cultivation and solicitation of donors with major gift potential. Collaborate with faculty and academic administrators in program development. Facilitate all required stewardship activities, including but not limited to acknowledgement and reporting to donors. (10%)
  6. Work closely with the Office of Technology Transfer and the Office of Research Administration to package multidimensional support initiatives. Develop gift strategies that leverage partnerships with on-campus research activities. (5%)
  7. In close collaboration with the office of Corporate Relations, execute the university's strategy to build strong relationships with association, corporation, and foundation partners. (5%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Perform other duties as assigned.

CONTACTS

Department: Frequent contact with the senior vice president, associate vice presidents, assistant vice presidents, executive directors, and directors of departments. Contact with staff as required to perform essential functions.

University: Contact with the President's Office, vice presidents, deans, trustees, alumni, directors of administrative departments, faculty and staff as required to perform essential functions.

External: Daily contact with foundation representatives, community organizers/advocates, federal, state, and local government officials. Contact with foreign visitors, healthcare officials and academic boards and organizations as required to perform essential functions.

Students: Contact with undergraduate, graduate, and professional students as required to perform essential functions.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

No staff supervisory responsibility.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: 7 or more years of professional experience and a corresponding track record in closing major gifts and grants. A strong background in Corporate and/or Foundation Relations, as well as proposal development is preferred.

Education/Licensing: Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  1. Knowledge of higher education is desirable.
  2. High degree of energy, creativity, flexibility, organization, and interpersonal skills as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
  3. Must be able to work both independently and collaboratively with colleagues.
  4. Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  5. Computer proficiency (including Microsoft Office) and the ability to learn new programs.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Case Western Reserve has adopted a new staff hybrid work policy with a goal of maintaining the vibrancy of our residential campus while also providing flexibility for remote work. General office environment, some evening and weekend work hours will be required. Travel required.
