Kohler's Consumer Channels is excited to continue its growth and expansion with the addition of a merchandising team, led by an entrepreneurial General Merchandising Manager (GMM). Kohler Consumer Channels is an independent business unit and strategic driver for the continued growth of Kohler Company. The Consumer Channels divisions consists of direct-to-consumer businesses that include, Kohler Signature Stores and Kohler Experience Centers, and Dealer-Direct (Kohler Walk-In Bath and Kohler Showers). Additional teams within the division include Customer Service, Digital Experience & Capabilities, eCommerce Operations, Consumer Marketing and Merchandising.  Each of these teams will serve as partners to this role. 

The GMM will build and lead an omnichannel merchandising team that is responsible for conceptualizing and developing the merchandise strategy, defining product assortments, initiating relevant consumer marketing for engagement and conversion, and ensuring impactful visual representation across consumer channels. This position is also responsible for managing the assortment, product programs, and business planning of products presented within the consumer channel, leveraging existing products and recommending procurement or development options.  The GMM will develop tactics with a team of merchandisers to ensure customer satisfaction and maximize business performance and profitability by executing business plans that maximize sales, margins and inventory turnover.

The Merchandising team will partner directly with Category Strategy and Marketing to develop tactics using data, trends, and insights to guide their approach.  As Kohler Consumer grows, the GMM and DMMs will take on additional responsibilities for recommending new categories and products - whether developed in-house as a kitchen or bath plumbing core product or offline accessory - to enhance a well-rounded collection of products for a "one-stop shop" experience.

This is a key role in the organization reporting to the VP & GM - Consumer Channels, KBNA and leading a team of Divisional Merchandise Managers (DMM), Design & Other Service Leads, Merchandise Coordinator and Business Development team members.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Product Strategy & Development: 
  • Guide, implement and develop the annual consumer business strategies by category, refining assortments for the consumer channel, identifying new product/category opportunities, directing functions for product presentation to optimize sales (eCommerce, PR/Social, Marketing and Visual), and partnering on pricing and promotions for margin management. Develop key item strategies and guidelines. Develop seasonal merchandise strategies.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the industry to inspire customers to purchase through presentation, pricing, design, and product development. Understand and address competitive barriers. Develop product vision by category.
  • Work closely with partner teams (category strategy, sourcing, creative) to develop the assortment, identify opportunities for the category and item distortion, balance the line by aesthetic, attribute, and develop a strong vision for product collaborations.
  • Install category management practices to provide a planning framework and financial direction. Deliver a perspective on visual merchandising design and eCommerce category pages to best inspire discovery and purchase by category.
  • Manage planning of products from kick-off through introduction into the market, creating product briefs for major introductions that are grounded in an understanding of consumer behavior, competitive offerings, and market trends and channel strategies.
  • Participate in annual strategic planning process to outline current and future opportunities for merchandising growth, including category, product, innovation, and team development.
  • Product Execution & Brand Marketing: Provide direction in-store visual, online presentation and marketing concepts, and provide input on product placement and brand packaging. Represent the brand with integrity and authority. Exhibit market awareness through knowledge of relevant brand's inspiration and reference points. Demonstrate the ability to understand and clearly communicate the brand aesthetic, design style, brand voice, and vision.
  • Demand & Inventory Planning: Based on consumer insights and data-based product performance, develop forecasts for category and products performance to inform demand insights and inventory investment. Analyze the business and react with timely reorders or merchandise changes, as necessary. Maximize markdown dollars and understand seasonality.
  • Channel Management: Develop product programs to support or adapt to retail store and eCommerce operations, partnering with teams to ensure execution and availability for maximum sales and turnover. Work across all channels to inspire the customer, drive traffic, conversion, and enhance the brand image and vision. Work collaboratively to create a multi-channel synergy and achieve overall financial goals for the brand.
  • Reporting & Analytics: Analyze performance against plans for both merchandise and Merchandisers. Evaluate product performance and developing necessary strategies.
  • Pricing & Promotions Strategy: Develop processes and practices around pricing promotions and markdowns to meet sales and margin targets. Establishes pricing strategies by store type.
  • Leadership: Coach and lead the buying team to realize goals. Foster an environment that promotes development, innovation, ownership and high morale amongst team.


  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing or related field.
  • At least eight years of merchandising or consumer products experience across multiple channels of trade, wholesale or retail, with experience in omnichannel merchandising.
  • Ability to plan, prepare, and execute strategic business plans. Demonstrated analytical and project management skills required.
  • Experience training, managing, and developing staff.
  • Ability to travel based on the needs of the business department is required.
