General Overview:

The Executive Director of Clinical Ethics is responsible for the overall planning, development, implementation, operation, and evaluation of ethics consultation, education, and integration with the Hospital Ethics Committee at Brigham and Women's Hospital. The aim of this work is to support and develop the ethical awareness and agency of all members of the organization related to clinical care. Areas of activities include consultation, education, committee participation, research, scholarship and policy development. The Executive Director works in close coordination with the chairperson(s) of the Ethics Committee and the Executive Sponsors to achieve these goals.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the day-to-day direction and coordination of the Ethics Service:
  • Manages call schedules for coverage of ethics consultation requests (via page, e-mail and voice mail).
  • Provides ethics consultation.
  • Develops policies, guidelines, and educational materials to support ethics consultation function.
  • Supervises Ethics Service staff, volunteers and interns.
  • Provides ethics rounds facilitation.
  • Directs maintenance of database of ethics consultation reports and trends by unit, theme, and volume.
  • Manges ethics consultation evaluation and quality improvement.
  • Manages plan for development of Ethics Service growth.
  • Ethics Committee:
  • Coordinates with chairperson to accomplish Ethics Committee tasks of consultation, education and policy development. Provides case materials and coordinates clinical attendance.
  • Collaboratively manages administrative aspects of committee - membership, requests for attendance, minutes.
  • Educations new Ethics Committee members to history, roles and responsibilities of membership.
  • Collaborates with chairperson to plan and implement development of the Ethics Committee.
  • Writes annual report and co-presents with Chairperson at the Committee's annual meeting and to Executive Sponsors CMO and CNO and Medical Staff Executive Committee as requested.
  • Education:
  • Provides ethics education as requested by clinical and administrative areas of the hospital.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationship with Harvard Medical School Center for Bioethics, and Harvard teaching hospitals through teaching, collaborative networking and problem solving, training resources and mentoring students, clinicians and interns.
  • Oversees internal and external communication on clinical ethics issues.
  • Manages the Weise Fund, sponsoring the annual Weise Lecture and other related activities.
  • Research:
  • Encourages and collaborates on clinical ethics research activities.
  • Supports ethics resources in IRBs.

  • 5. Other
  • Participates in hospital committees as needed.
  • Supervises and evaluates administrative and clinical personnel.
  • Responsible for identifying and communicating budgetary needs during the financial planning cycle.
  • Responsible for maintaining expense levels for the Ethics Consultation Service.
  • Maintains current knowledge of ethical trends and emerging knowledge, legal issues related to ethics, and ethical theory.


  • Qualifications
    Qualifications:
    • Advanced nursing degree or MD and either PhD or advanced training in bioethics required.
    • Minimum 10 years clinical healthcare experience.
    • Experience in working with teams in a complex organization.
    • Current Ethics Consultation certification required or to be attained within first year of hire. Certification must be maintained while employed in this position.
    Skills and Abilities:
    • Excellent written and verbal skills.
    • Ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with clinicians, patients and family members in stressful situations.
    • Basic command of data management and analysis.
    • Advanced ability to facilitate multidisciplinary communication and collaboration.
    • Attends to the sensitivity of issues and emotions evoked in clinical and family members when addressing themes such as death and dying, value difference and moral authority.
    Working Conditions:
    • Office setting
    • Frequent use of computer and telephone.
    • Infrequent periods of high stress related to unexpected clinical events.
    • Frequent periods of on call.
    • Must be responsive to multiple deadlines.
    Supervisory Responsibilities:

    Responsible for training, supervision and delegation to Administrative Coordinator
