Position Summary

The Fowler College of Business (FCB) consists of one school and four academic departments (Charles W. Lamden School of Accountancy, Finance, Management Information Systems, Management, and Marketing), a Dean, an Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, an Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, a Director for Resource Management, a Director for Graduate Programs, a Director for Undergraduate Programs, a Director for Assessment, a Director for the Graduate Career Management Center, and a Managing Director for the Center for Advancing Global Business.

The Career Management Center (CMC) within the FCB provides career and professional development services for students in the Fowler College of Business. Activities within the CMC include, but are not limited to, career counseling, the development and implementation of specific activities to improve job market success of students, and development and implementation of regular events to permit employers and students to interact. A critical component of the CMC as a unit is to develop an extensive list of employers and alumni and to cultivate a relationship with other career-related agencies within the university, region, and nation to improve the development and employment opportunities of students upon graduation. The CMC is also responsible for designing metrics to assess its success, and to design and implement a constant improvement system.

The Director of the Career Management Center provides leadership in the areas of: 1) career center development and stewardship, including strategic planning and implementation contributing substantially to student success, student engagement, staff and resource management, and partnerships to ensure effective management of the center; 2) career development, including the design of development programs, and career advising to business students; 3) events and internships, including career fairs and employer visits; and 4) external/alumni relations and donor relations.

The incumbent in this position manages a team that designs, implements, and evaluates career readiness and professional development services for undergraduate and graduate students in the Fowler College of Business.

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, at-will position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. but may vary based on operational needs.

This position is physically located at the SDSU Main Campus in San Diego.

Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in behavioral sciences, student services, business administration or other related field.
  • Must possess a thorough and demonstrated understanding of concepts, programs, services and outreach related to managing an effective and responsive business career center.
  • Experience in the knowledge and use of standard business reporting practices; ability to oversee and manage a range of budgets and fiscal requirements.

Specialized Skills
  • Experience in developing, managing and contributing to planning and practices that apply to career development and experiential learning areas
  • Experience in developing practices and procedures that support compliance with university, state and federal requirements and guidelines as they related to internships and other areas of experiential learning
  • Experience in developing, tracking, analyzing and reporting on student success measures such as graduate outcomes and programming.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with students, employers, faculty and community partners to promote the professional success of students
  • Demonstrated experience in working with, and promoting the success of, individuals of diverse backgrounds
  • Group presentation skills, teaching, and/or training experience, including in-person and virtual environments
  • Experience using presentation tools such as PowerPoint, Google Slides, or Prezi, and delivery methods including Camtasia, Zoom, and/or related platforms/tools

Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of seven years' experience in career services/career development, or student development at the college/university level
  • Supervisory and/or administrative experience at the Assistant/Associate Director, or Director level
  • Minimum of five years' experience working directly with business majors, at the graduate and/or undergraduate level
  • Knowledge of the California State University's policies and procedures as they relate to the CMC and the Fowler College of Business
  • National certification by a professional body in counseling, career counseling, career coaching, or a related discipline
  • Experience using Handshake, Symplicity, or related career resource platform
  • Experience using Blackboard, Canvas, or related Learning Management System
  • Demonstrated experience in utilizing various social media platforms to engage with students, alumni, recruiters, hiring managers, and/or other professionals
  • Knowledge of the California State University's policies and procedures as they relate to the Career Management Center and areas related to experiential learning, such as internships and consulting projects

CSU Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. An individual is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose of a two-shot vaccine or two weeks after the first dose of a single-shot vaccine.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.

Supplemental Information

The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

All management and executive employees shall be required to provide a written statement to the appropriate administrator of any and all outside employment. Employees shall also provide a written statement of outside employment if a written request by an administrator is made.
