DEFINITION:

An employee in this class is responsible for the specialized care of individuals who are mentally retarded. Work involves providing individualized care under professional direction, activities of daily living, including proper maintenance of living units, and guiding individuals in individualized program plans and leisure activities. Work is performed in accordance with appropriate procedures under the close supervision of a higher-level supervisor, who reviews results through daily observation of activities in progress, individuals' responsiveness, inspection of quarters, reports and periodic conferences. Staff will be required to follow a designated shift routine as outlined by the supervisor.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Supervises, instructs or assists the individuals in performing activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, eating and personal hygiene.

Provides individualized care, active treatment and appropriate documentation under professional direction.

Must provide age-appropriate on-going interactions with individuals during structured and unstructured activities that are directed towards individual identified needs.

Participates in in-service training courses.

Participates in housekeeping functions in the individuals' living quarters, including responsibility for their personal effects and spot-cleaning when necessary.

Plans and provides guidance in social, recreational, work, community and program activities.

Copes with day-to-day problems and feelings of the individuals and reports observations on individual behavior.

Participates in staff meeting as an integral member of the individuals interdisciplinary team.

Transports and/or accompanies the individuals to various activities in the community.

Works cooperatively with all personnel involved in the active treatment of the individuals in our care.

Works in other areas and/or takes hospital trips when coverage dictates this necessary at the supervisor's discretion.

Escorts the individuals to and from Program areas and assists in Program areas during scheduled class periods. This includes conducting classes.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED (Continued):

Ensures the safety of the individuals is maintained at all times by providing a safe living environment.

Provides written reports on the individuals' progress and program effectiveness.

Participates in training programs provided by all disciplines involved in the total individual program and the follow-through of such programs.

Implements and documents goal plans that emphasize skill development and have objectives that are consistent with assessed needs and specified developmental services and programs, including Behavior Management Plans and other required documentation.

Maintains accountabilities for all individuals in their charge throughout the course of shift(s) worked.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to conduct and implement functional assessments.

Ability to read and write.

Ability to prepare necessary reports and recording of individuals' program progress.

Ability to plan and supervise social, recreational, work and program activities for individuals in an assigned living area.

Ability to cope with day-to-day problems and to record and report observations.

Ability to maintain an understanding attitude toward the individuals in our care.

Ability to keep and maintain records with accuracy and completeness.

Ability to lift and transfer individuals, utilizing prescribed techniques, usually exceeding fifty (50) pounds.

Ability to follow procedures established for care and use of equipment and food preparation.

Ability to maintain effective communication (including sign language) with staff and verbal and non-verbal individuals.

Ability to implement proper practices and techniques of supervision of the individuals in our care.

Ability to demonstrate flexibility and initiative in the job responsibilities and follow instructions.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

A high school diploma or GED is required. Related experience is helpful. The employee must possess good verbal and written communication skills
