Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences (PNWU) was founded as a 501(c) (3) non-profit medical institution in 2005. PNWU's mission is to educate and train health care professionals emphasizing service among rural and medically underserved communities throughout the Northwest. With a vision of revolutionizing community health, PNWU strives to enhance and maintain an inclusive and welcoming environment which seeks contributions from those of diverse backgrounds who will represent and advocate for the communities we serve. Currently, the university offers a Doctoral degree in Osteopathic Medicine, a Master of Arts in Medical Sciences degree, and boasts a total enrollment of 580 medical and graduate students. Collaborations with Washington State University, including satellite programs in pharmacy and nursing, add an additional 120 health professions students to the PNWU campus. Future growth is well underway, with ongoing development of a School of Physical Therapy and a School of Occupational Therapy.

General Summary:

Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences (PNWU) invites applications for the Founding Dean of the proposed School of Dental Medicine (SDM).

The dean of the proposed School of Dental Medicine at Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences is the lead academic, administrative, and fiscal officer of the School. The dean provides executive leadership for the school and reports to the provost. It is the duty of the dean to enhance the academic program as it relates to PNWU and SDM missions. The dean is to make recommendations to the provost relating to academic policies of the SDM and the maintenance of coordination among University divisions, including fostering and promoting organizational effectiveness as well as diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Leads in the development of mission, vision and goals, curriculum, clinical agreements, budgets, and strategic plans for the SDM
  • Responsible for meeting the accreditation standards and ensuring preparation of materials and documentation required for initial and continued accreditation of the SDM by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and other accrediting agencies (state and regional)
  • Recruits, selects, manages, and evaluates a team of assistant/associate deans, department/discipline heads, faculty, and other non-faculty administrative staff
  • Builds and maintains internal and external strategic partnerships to support the community based, integrated model of dental education
  • Collaborates with the other deans and program directors of PNWU in developing an integrated SDM
  • Participates in fundraising and development initiatives in cooperation with the chief development officer
  • Promotes a community that is highly collaborative, highlights student success, faculty, and staff accomplishments, and embodies a climate that values diversity, equity, and inclusivity
  • In collaboration with the chief financial officer and chief operations officer, conducts budget preparation and budget management of the SDM
  • Serves or delegates as an ad hoc member of all committee associated with the SDM
  • Understands accreditation standards and expectations specific to the unit and adheres to policies and procedures to meet or exceed such standards
  • Conducts self appropriately and consistently in accordance with the philosophy and mission of PNWU
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

Education:

  • Required: Must have earned the degree of DMD or DDS from an institution accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA)

Experience:

  • Preferred: State license to practice Dentistry
  • Demonstrated experience of at least 10 years in teaching, research, service, clinical practice, or a strong record of scholarly and/or professional achievement
  • Demonstrated academic leadership abilities as a senior administrator at a CODA accredited College/School of Dental Medicine (preference is given to those with at least five years of experience) which included budget management authority and a record of significant participation in academic leadership at the state and/or national level
  • Experience leading professional programmatic and regional accreditation processes
  • Demonstrated understanding of the operations and finances of a dental college/school
  • Demonstrated commitment to public health, rural communities, and evidenced-based care
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence and innovation in dental education, primary care integration, and interprofessional education
  • Demonstrated commitment to collaboration with partner Federally Qualified Health Centers and other community health providers
  • Demonstrated passion for rural and underserved communities as well as underrepresented populations
