Dean of the Honors College, University of Oklahoma

The University of Oklahoma (Norman, OK) invites applications, letters of nomination, and inquiries for the position of Dean of the Honors College. The dean holds an endowed chair in the Honors College and reports to the Provost and Senior Vice President of the University. The OU Honors College serves approximately 2,500 undergraduate students, providing them with the atmosphere and community of a small liberal arts college with all the opportunities and resources of an R1 university. We seek a creative and visionary leader with wide-ranging intellectual interests who will work with the College's faculty and staff, university administrators, community leaders, and alumni to strengthen and champion our work with outstanding undergraduate students from all majors and programs at the university. The dean of the Honors College is responsible for developing and maintaining innovative and creative initiatives, relationships, and partnerships across the University and with the surrounding community that will provide highly motivated students the best education possible.

The successful candidate will be enthusiastic about collaborating with faculty, staff, and students to develop curricular and extracurricular projects and programs; will embrace transparency in leadership; and will further justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives at all levels of the College. An energetic commitment to advancing undergraduate research opportunities across disciplines as well as a demonstrated respect for holistic student development in other arenas are also requisite for this position. The dean must work innovatively and productively with the other members of the University Deans' Council to advocate for the College's interests; with the Office of University Advancement to ensure a stable and sustainable future for the unit; and with the Honors College's dedicated faculty and staff to ensure a productive, respectful, and collegial environment where all can thrive.

The Dean leads a group of accomplished tenured and tenure-track interdisciplinary humanities and social science faculty who teach seminar-style classes in their areas of specialization. College faculty and staff lead the Honors College's signature academic initiatives: the Writing Center, the Medical Humanities Program, and Honors at Oxford. The College also administers the University's nationally competitive scholarship competitions and boasts a strong record of success, particularly with with Rhodes, Marshall, and Goldwater applicants. A thriving Honors Student Association; student-led reading groups and discussions about current events; an undergraduate research journal; and OUtdoor Adventure, a pre-orientation backpacking trip for incoming students - all these exemplify the wide range of opportunities the College offers to its students and the larger OU community.

Qualifications:

  • Doctorate or other terminal degree in field of specialization;
  • Record of excellence in teaching, scholarly or creative activity, and service requisite to an appointment as a tenured faculty in the Honors College, preferably at the rank of full professor;
  • Record of effective, visionary leadership, and sound fiscal management at the Chair, Director, or higher level; or equivalent administrative and leadership experience;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute a shared vision for the Honors College;
  • Demonstrated commitment to undergraduate research, teaching, and mentoring;
  • Demonstrated skills and record of achievement as a communicator, planner, collaborator, manager, and fundraiser in an interdisciplinary environment;
  • Demonstrated commitment to transparent leadership and shared governance;
  • Demonstrated experience with diversity, equity, and inclusivity initiatives;
  • Demonstrated ability to foster relationships with the community beyond the university.
