Search for the Dean of Barrett, The Honors College

Tempe, Arizona

Arizona State University seeks a dynamic and experienced leader to serve as Dean of Barrett, The Honors College.

Barrett Honors College is a selective residential college within Arizona State University. Named one of the top honors colleges in the nation by several reviews and "the gold standard for honors colleges" by the NY Times, Barrett comprises-what by many measures of academic quality are-the top 10% of the undergraduate students at ASU. There is a Barrett community on each of the four ASU metropolitan Phoenix campuses (Downtown Phoenix, Polytechnic, Tempe and West) and each offers what is called "the best of both worlds": the caring and support of a residential college coupled with the vast resources of one of the nation's largest public universities. Barrett also prioritizes global reach through the Barrett Office of Global Initiatives; enhanced personal and professional development offerings through the T.W. Lewis Center for Personal Development; and, with a mission to expand access, honors opportunities for upper-division ASU online students. This unique combination attracts large numbers of gifted students: Barrett has one of the highest success rates in the country with nationally-competed scholarships such as Fulbright, Marshall, Goldwater, Udall, Mitchell and Boren. Furthermore, Barrett students move on to the top professional schools and graduate programs in the nation after graduation.

Arizona State University is a new model for American higher education, an unprecedented combination of academic excellence, entrepreneurial energy and broad access. In Fall 2021, ASU serves over 64,000 undergraduate students in metropolitan Phoenix, Arizona, the nation's fifth largest city. ASU champions intellectual and cultural diversity, and welcomes students from all fifty states and more than one hundred nations across the globe. ASU has been advancing academic excellence and innovative academic programs for the last 19 years under President Michael Crow, adding 5 Nobel Prize winners and multiple National Academy members to its faculty, at least 50 new building projects to its facilities, and entirely new academic schools and colleges. This expansion has resulted in large increases in federal and private grants and national and international accolades (see https://about.asu.edu/rankings) including the "#1 Most Innovative" university in the nation for seven straight years awarded by US News.

The incoming Dean will serve at the helm of one of the most dynamic honors colleges in the country that currently enrolls 7,116 students. Reporting to ASU's Executive Vice President and University Provost, the Dean of Barrett oversees the entire honors college operation, including the honors curriculum, both as provided by the 44 Barrett honors faculty themselves and as provided by the almost 2000 faculty from the larger ASU who contribute honors courses, contracts and thesis direction to the honors students each year. The Dean oversees all business activities and all development activities of the honors college, including all parent and alumni programs and planning. Working with the Vice Dean and the Senior Associate Dean of Students, the Dean also plans and guides all student engagement programming and student support services such as honors advising. The Dean of Barrett also serves in a cross-university role and regularly interacts with, and takes part in active planning with, the University Provost and the other deans on issues of university wide importance.

The incoming Dean will lead Barrett into its next era of excellence. The ideal candidate will be a tenured faculty member with a PhD with experience with honors students and honors programs. They will have the ability to articulate a compelling vision for a culture of academic excellence and the skill to engage the honors and university communities around this vision. They must have experience supervising a large staff, the ability to develop collegial and productive relationships across the university, and the vision to create a commitment and unified approach to an honors college at our uniquely different metropolitan campuses. In addition, successful candidates must have a proven record of advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts and show strong evidence of visionary leadership, innovative and entrepreneurial thinking, administrative and fundraising acumen, and the ability to foster an environment of growth and intellectual development for students, faculty, and staff. The next Dean will also bring a distinguished scholarly record appropriate for appointment as Professor at ASU.
