Illinois State University seeks a strategic and innovative academic leader committed to the mission, vision, and values outlined in the University's strategic plan to serve as dean of the College of Education. The dean is the chief academic and executive officer of the college, providing vision and leadership in teaching, research, and service in the context of shared governance. The dean leads the development and implementation of the college's strategic future, and reports to the provost, who also serves as vice president for academic affairs.

The dean has overall responsibilities for developing an effective, collegial environment that supports excellence in teaching, research, and service while faculty advance the field of education. Moreover, the dean will facilitate collaboration between faculty members and among programs within the college and university, and will coordinate the college's efforts with schools, corporations, other universities and communities, and state, federal, and international agencies. The dean will provide leadership and support efforts to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in ISU's culture, environment, programs, policies, and personnel. The dean must be committed to ISU's urban teacher preparation focus; to continued excellence in undergraduate and graduate education; to support for faculty scholarship and research activities, including extramural funding; and to partnerships with local schools. The dean will engage college faculty, staff and students in developing a shared plan for the future of the college and its role in the broader mission of the University.

The College of Education provides leadership in teacher and administrator education through delivery of programs in several departments and units, including the Departments of Educational Administration and Foundations and Special Education, The School of Teaching and Learning, Thomas Metcalf School, University High School, and the Cecilia J. Lauby Teacher Education Center. The College of Education also coordinates the Council for Teacher Education and leads the dissemination of research that informs educational policy and practice.

Illinois State is ranked as one of the top ten largest teacher preparation institutions in the nation among American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education Institutions. Nearly one in eight Illinois public school teachers is an alum of Illinois State. The college is a comprehensive and complex organization that prepares educators and administrators for the full range of education professions. The college enrolls more than 3,000 students, who choose from a wide array of teacher and administrator preparation programs, including early childhood education; elementary education; middle level education; reading; bilingual and bicultural education; learning and behavior; deaf and hard of hearing; low vision and blindness; leadership, equity, and inquiry; and areas of educational administrator/leadership. Graduate programs are offered in teaching and learning, special education, K-12 administration, and higher education administration. The college also provides a wide range of professional development for education professionals. Graduates are teachers, principals, superintendents, college and university presidents, student affairs personnel, professors, researchers, and policy makers.

The College of Education is one of only 85 in the nation that maintains laboratory schools. Thomas Metcalf and University High Schools provide a unique educational option from pre-kindergarten through the senior year for approximately 1,000 students in the community. The schools also serve as sites for clinical experiences that are critically important to the college's future teachers.

Required Qualifications:

1. Doctorate or terminal degree in related field.

2. Fundamental understanding of the scholarly, teaching, and service responsibilities of a College of Education faculty member at a major university, and a working knowledge of the pedagogical, economic, and political relationships among academic units within the College.

3. Demonstrated commitment to equity and support of the critical needs of a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.

4. Record of successful administrative leadership in a college of education.

5. Accomplished as a scholar and teacher commensurate with eligibility for a tenured appointment at the rank of Professor within one of the college's departments/schools.

6. Experience providing leadership in legislative or other state or federal policy actions pertaining to university and college missions.

7. Demonstrated energy, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to communicate effectively.

8. Skilled in securing and allocating resources to provide quality undergraduate and graduate instruction, research, public engagement and outreach activities.

9. Success securing and managing extramural funding.

10. Experience in strategic planning.

11. Ability to work with other deans and administrators in developing goals and programs.

12. Experience in teacher education accreditation.
