Job Description

The Data Scientist Jr. / Physical Scientist Jr. will provide support to the team with the operation of a technical and operational reachback center dedicated to the analysis of geophysical, geospatial, and electronic data collected in the field.

The Data Scientist Jr. / Physical Scientist Jr. works on multi-disciplinary projects, studies, and methodologies acting as a technical advisor and consultant on remote detection methods, techniques and instrumentation and the interpretation and analysis of derived data.

The Data Scientist Jr. / Physical Scientist Jr. supports a team responsible for conducting studies, methodologies, and programs to improve the quality and efficiency of data collection, data processing, data collection procedures, and the handling, analyzing, archiving, searching/mining of large amounts of sensor data.

The Data Scientist Jr. / Physical Scientist Jr. will provide assistance with the execution of hands-on field data collection surveys and will gain real-life exposure to various work sites and operational tempo. Fieldwork may include, but not be limited to, assisting with tasks such as planning, setting up and executing field surveys in support of various DHS missions. When not performing field work, the candidate will assist with analyzing sensor, performing modeling and simulation, and presenting field data, or performing other advanced data analysis techniques in support of law enforcement actions.

Job Requirements

• Experience: 0-3 years
• Understanding and/or experience with computer systems and electronics and their use in collecting and analyzing field data. Appreciation and desire to perform outdoor field work for extended periods (up to 2-week increments). Experience and enthusiasm for learning and using mathematical modelling and simulation tools.
• Minimum Education level: Bachelor of Science (preferably in a physical science or IT related field such as Geophysics, Physics, Computer Science, or Engineering. 10 years of direct experience may substitute for education requirement
• Travel: Up to 75%
• Office Location: Sterling, VA (onsite work required, remote work on a case-by-case basis)
• Security: Candidate must be able to successfully pass and maintain a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) U.S. Customs and Border Protection Background Investigation (BI)
• US Citizenship required.

Additional Requirements:

• Ability to assist with the preparation of clear and concise reports detailing data analysis and creating project documentation and requirements
• Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Software
• Ability to manage large datasets without supervision
• Ability to execute field work in 100+ degree heat with appropriate breaks and hydration
• Comfortable wearing hand, eye, and hearing protection
• Must be able to work in a team environment

Physical Requirements

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Position may require typing and reading from a computer screen. Must have sufficient mobility, including but not limited to bending, reaching, and kneeling to complete daily duties in a timely and efficient manner. There is a possibility that due to parking availability and location of work, walking moderate to long distance may be required. Possible lifting up to 50lbs.
